I'm thining of picking up the game soon but wanted to know if i had to play Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind before playing this one. Says on the Oblivion site a sequel to Morrowind. Will i be lost if i play this game without playing any of the previous installments? Hope i don't get bored seeing as this game is a love it or hate it kinda game.

Oblivion is an awesome game and you don't have to play Elder Scrolls III to know what's going on. I didn't even know it was a sequel. I thought it was more like FF where ever game had its own storyline

Buy it brother. The only way you'll hate it is if you absolutelydespise playingsolewith only thecpu. Even if you are heavy into online gaming, view oblivion as a gourgeous walk in the woods to clear you headbetween matches.

Thissitecan answer almost any question you would have: www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion

No offsen to all the morrowind lovers but i hated that game so much i fell asleep lpaying it. Its like a frickin textbook. YOu ask something and tehy give you 2 pages to read from. Its SOOOO text heavy and you have absolutely no idea what you're doing the entire time. I hope oblivion is a lot more fun becasue i sure hated morrowind

Oblivion's quest log works much more fluidly because it lets you choose any quest you want from your journal and set it as your current quest. This will organize all the info you need, and put a marker on your compass that tells you where to go. My brother played through most of the game by skipping the text and just following the markers on the radar, so you could easily do the same. Oblivion is much more accessible than Morrowind.

nah you dont need Morrowind to enjoy this game. Its got its own sperate story line. Although, there are some easter eggs which you would notice if you had played the first one.

No, you don't need to play Morrowind. And you probably shouldn't, because once you see the greatness of Morrowind, it's hard to play trash like Oblivion.

If you're looking for an RPG, well, look elsewhere. Oblivion is not an RPG- it's a slightly-stat based adventure game.

O.o ... trash like Oblivion ? Oh man I have to say Morrowind was a god-awful game. Visually the game was great (look at the water effect; it had the best. Minus the fact that you and NPCs walked like a retard the game play itself was terrible (not knowing where you are aiming with bow and arrow), quests are completely abstract, most of the times you had no idea where to begin and end. Oblivion was a big improvement. The combat system was more friendly, quests were not all that ambiguous, visually stunning(NPCs did not walk like they had something up their anus) . Never the less, there are some factors that I did not like about Oblivion. The first one would be the bugs, there are tons of minor bugs, but does not really hinder your game play. Second would be lack of armors and weapons. For such a massive game like this, there could have been more dynamic range of weapons and armors.

It's exactly because you never liked other RPGs (mainly japanese RPGs I think) that's why you really like this game and won't believe how others may not like this game.

This game is too open ended for its own good, it's almost like an online MMORPG but with only yourself in it. Which made it lonely and boring.

oblvion is a great game in its own right, but it holds your hand a bit too much, i didnt mind first or second time round of playing it. I did however prefer morrowinds get out the boat and do whatever you want feeling.

A couple points.

-At the time of Morrowind's release, no game had very interactive NPCs. You can't trash a game by modern standards because it would've been impossible (Morrowind already required a beast of a system at the time- it would've just gotten worse) to impliment.

-Granted some of the quests in Morrowind weren't very clear, the solution is not to just throw up a red arrow on the screen which will take you to exactly where you need to go. Perhaps it would be ok if it were a known location, but when it's an item that's "somewhere" in a cave, well, it doesn't make sense to lead you by the hand. Furthermore, the cost of having less ambigious quests is that you have no choice any more...your only choice in the game is to accept the quest or not accept it. In one quest, the person asks you not to tell someone else about an item they have...well, he needn't worry- I don't even have the dialogue option.

-The combat is more friendly in Oblivion only because it's based off rules of action games, not RPGs. If Bethesda called it an action game, I'd have no complaints, but player skill should have little effect in an RPG.

exactly. you cant compair older game to newer ones and say things like the graphics arerubbish on the older one. that's like saying ff7 is rubbish coz the graphics are lame compaired to ps3's capabilities. compairit toother games of its day.

that said, i haven't morrowwind, nor am i likley to as i dont like putting games on my pc.

but oblivion is amazing. you generally dont get bored with the game, coz if you cant be bothered with one section of the game, eg main quest, there's always other options for you, fighters guild, mages guild, thieves guild, dark brotherhood, misc quests, etc...etc... top game

Don't listen to the haters that say oblivion is trash. Just because it's RPG-lite (which i agree with, but do not mind) the hardcore RPG players hate it. I dig the ultima series, baulder's gate, icewind dale, fallout, planescape, diablo and the rest of the elder scrolls games (AKA 'real' RPGs), etc. and i love oblivion. I have played oblivion probably 200 hours and i haven't beaten the main quest because it has been too interesting to do the side quests and to start new characters with different playstyles.

Yeah, it's RPG-lite, but it's also the best game on the ps3 right now. I say buy it and don't look back.

Also, morrowind is a really great game. You don't need it to play oblivion at all, but there are some little easter eggs that you might notice if you do. In addition, the games take place in the same world, so a lot of history and even some minor characters are shared, but this stuff is very minor. There are entire books (though, they are more like pamphlets) written on history of the world and things like that in the games. I recommend playing Morrowind anyway. It is a really great game, but after playing oblivion some of it seems a little rough around the edges due to the "RPG-Lite" features integrated into Oblivion, like fast travel, the magical compass, etc. So i'd play that first. But if you're really anxious to get started on oblivion go for it.

I am sorry.. I don't ever recall making comparison btwn Oblivion and Morrowind. I was making a comparison btwn Morrowind and Oblivion in terms of how things improved. I wasn't at all bashing a game based on modern standard. Secondly, I don't recall talking about NPC interactions, I didn't say the way they "talk" or "interact" I said they way they walked. Unless I had a defected copy of a game, the NPCs and you "walked" like a duck. That was really bothersome to me. To the person who posted after, did you even read my post? I said the games visual was great, what bothered me was the gameplay and quest development.

Morrowind is the better game, but you won't need to know anything about it to get Oblivion. I suggest you get Oblivion and Morrowind for the PC.
