Oblivion fighting??!!??

I'm up to level 10, a bit more focused on magic stuff, but my armor, block and blade are apprentice level or more (over 25)

I seem to be a wuss in fights.  I end up having to use guerrilla summon and run tactics to beat almost anyone.  Is there a secret to fighting?  When I go toe to toe I generally get jarred by one of their blocks and then get whooped on.

Also, can you train the physical fighting styles without fighting?  I tried going against one of the combat dummies but didnt' notice the bar going up.

My last thought is that I may just need to get better magic items, the ones I have are OK.

this works for me, so

first you block, wait for your opponent to make a strike

once they got bounced back by your block, you then attack, usually two strikes are enough

then you go block again

repeat

 What are you fighting?  I just started not too long ago and I can kill the guards pretty easily enough. I took on two of them the other night without any problem at all.

TIP (I have the PC version but I doubt anything has changed).

Magic skills will increase ANYTIME you use them.

Blade, block, blunt, etc. will only increase on living targets.

You can pay to train (I believe up to 5 points) in each skill from a capable trainer.

Take from this what you will but if you focused on magic then your combat skills will suffer and the best thing to do is either pay to train or slaughter mudcrabs and rats for easy skill-ups.

You skill faster depending on the skills you choose to focus on in the beginning (escort the king in the beginning).

well I know what the TC is saying.  I'm at level 8 and when it comes to one on one fights I can handle my own but against two or more thats when I have alot of trouble.  I do either one of three things. 

My conjuration level is really low so I use scrolls to summon the undead.(side note how does one increase their conjuration level when most of the spells require a level over 25). 

I try getting the enemies into a narrow hallway so as I can't fight them all in front of me, or this is the most common one I can't remember if its becasue of my birth, sign, or the fact I'm a redguard but everyday I get to use this spell that just about fortifies all  my attributes up to 30 points.  Once I cast that spell I seem to become inhuman, infact I'm so strong after casting that spell I don't even block anymore and just keep swinging my sword until their all dead.

Well, the lower level spells are learned when doing quests for the mages' guilds in different towns.

Usually the quest involves go X, get Y, but to get Y you will need this spell (Z) to do it.

The spell is a very low level spell and requires little mana.

Anyhow, to up your casting skill levels of any magic skill just cast the cheapest(mana) type of spell from that class.

My advise to the TC would be to use fortify spells especially ones that will fortify your health and strength.  Fortifing those two will definitely help you in battle.

Conjuration by the way, get bound dagger or something and cast it till your blue in the face.

Join a guild and take all the junk and sell it.. sad but works. :(

I took the advice of the dude..4 or 5 up.  I got expert on conjuration and now can some some bas a$ monsters.

I block if approached then as back up.

Ok first off, im a cheater. However since i cant cheat on Oblivion with a cheat device i try to get around things, cut corners. Everything i know how to do, i learned from how i cheated in Morrorwind.

Now let me start off by saying Conjuration is THE EASIEST skill to master! What you do is go get the weakest summon spell you can find (The Ghost i think...) then create a custom spell. Create a custom Ghost summon, and make his duration 1 sec. Make EVERYTHING at its lowest. Then create it. Its extremely cheap in both money and magick. Go someplace safe and summon the hell out of that custom Ghost. Hell come up and vanish as soon as you summon him. Your conjuration bar will go up alot!

When i did this i started at Conjuration 35, i got to 100 in about...maybe a little over an hour. Thats pretty fast and worth it.
