Would getting Oblivion GOTY edition be too overwhelming? The only RPG type game I've played is Valkyria Chronicles.

Oblivion is worth getting for anyone who likes open-world RPGs, or even just open world games in general. I never played Valkyria Chronicles, so i can't compare.

How does Oblivion's open world compare to GTA, Red Dead, InFamous, and others?

Valkyria Chronicles is a very different game from Oblivion or Fallout 3 (strategy vs action-RPG). Oblivion is more medieval, while Fallout 3 is more post-apocalyptic.

A lot bigger, not to mention Shivering Isles adds another open world. And locations are available for quick travel once you discover them, as long as you're not in a building or dungeon. So exploring in Oblivion I find is much easier than any of those games you listed.

I would prefer medieval. Never played a game like that. I'm burned out on post-apocalyptic things. Can Oblivion be picked up/put down so to speak?

Quick travel is a nice feature. I loved Red Dead because of the different atmosphere. I didn't care for GTA IV, just tired of the city setting. InFamous was a city setting, but unique gameplay. So action RPG. Does that mean constant fighting or turn-based like FF? Is it fun if I'm not a big number cruncher as far as leveling etc.?

Talking as you see people, you fight if you see things attacking you (you'll know it). I haven't played Oblivion but I do have Fallout 3 and I did play its predecessor Morrowind. You don't really have to be a big numbers cruncher and you can develop your character your way.

oblivion is fantastic such a large game. the combat is open and smooth I find leveling up is completely different, you level up by using different things not by defeating monsters (works very well) and the quests and stories are so fun!

I think you may be dissappointed with Oblivion especially playing Valkyria Chronicles. I didn;t mind Oblivion, but I couldnt get into, whereas, VC was amazing in every way possible!

Just to let you know, Oblivion is a massive game. I never found it overwhelming, but there's a lot to do and many places to explore full of lots of loot. You'll never get lost of confused though since the journal does a good job at keeping track of all your quests. The gameplay is nothing like Valkaria Chronicles though.
