Ok. So I purchased Oblivion GOTY edition this past weekend. I have played for probably 5 or 6 hours and I am completely and absolutely overwhelmed. There is too much to do. I have several issues that I want help with. Will the feeling of being overwhelmed go away after I really get into the game? I am a member of the Mages and Fighters guilds already but I pass books (literally dozens and dozens) and I just dont feel like sitting there and reading them. Is this a bad thing? I don't like how I cant look all over a map to see where I need to go or want to go or at least get an idea of where I CAN go. (Is there a way to get a map of the world that you can actually look at the entire thing? Also, I am poor. My gold has never exceeded 350 and I feel like I am so limited by it.

I don't know. I just feel like this game is going to suck my life away and I would really rather play a game that I can enjoy for a few hours, put it down, and feel satisfied that I actually did something.

You don't have to read the books in the fighters and mages guild.

You just have to go to the leader and ask for missions to do, don't have to read books. :P

Few pointers:

- On the 360 version, the player menu was the B button, so I assume it is circle on PS3... You do everything on that screen... The first few pages are your skills/levels, etc... There is your inventory page that includes all items carried... Then last there is your journal that includes a list of current quest, completed quest, a local map (of your immediate area), and a world map that shows the entire game world... After you discover a couple different locations, you can use the world map to fast travel between locations...

- To level up, focus on the main skills you chose... Every 10 of those skills in any combination grants you a level, and you level up by sleeping...

- Leveling skills in Oblivion is similar to MMOs in a way, you have to use them to level them... So acrobatics, you jump and fall to raise it... Destruction magic, you cast destruction spells, etc...

Thats all I have for now...

You can gain some small amounts of experience by checking out the books around Tamriel. Dont read the. Just open the first page and back out again, if it gives you exp, it will tell u right away, and only some books do. Almost a waste of time. Yes the feeling goes away after a while, but this game will consume your life for months at a time. I think I finally put it down after 3 plays and 800 hours of game time. Before you go on missions and whatnot. I recommend you do some adventuring/exploring to familiarize yourself with the size of the playable world and a few of the basics in the game. Also, dont rush to complete the story missions, or go to the shivering isles too early(the "door in niben bay", talk about getting overwhelmed).

The overwhelming feelingwill end after you get used to everything a bit. I had the same as you, but you get used to it don't worry this game doesn't require much dedication or knowledge at all. :D I play it for a few hours sometimes do a few quests, then put it down for 2 weeks, etc. Over the course of a few months this added up to 120 hours on one character already lol Anyway you don't really need gold, just use weapons and armor you find in the field don't buy it, if you are hurt after combat just rest for 1 hour and you're good as new I don't think I ever used a potion or a scroll or something but this may very well vary per class. IF you need gold just go kill some goblins in a random cave and take their most valuable weapons and armor and sell them to the blacksmith in a town, repeat. My ps3 goty version had a poster in the box with the whole world map on it so I used that for the first few hours. Don't worry about it, just play it some more and you will figure things out, it's worth it!

Also ingame books are mostly useless unless you want some entertainment, there are a few out there that grant you some skill upgrade but don't go out looking for them, not worth it. [Double posting lazyness]

What class are you because personally I am forced to use potions a lot. My mana goes down so fast and so do does my health.

I'm not sure anyone mentioned this by try to level up your repair skill as early on as possible. Been a while since I played but if I remember correctly magical enhanced equipment cost a fortune to repair in stores.

Magic equipment doesn't need much repairing... It does need recharging though, which is free if you do it yourself, but yes it is very expensive to have a vendor rechard it...

If you are loosing your mana and health to fast (as a magic based character) then you are doing something wrong... Most people think they need some fireball spell that does nine million damage in 1 second and uses 400 mana, but that isn't necessary... A simple damage spell of like 10 damage a second over 5 seconds and costing only 30 mana adds up... Hit them with like 3 of those and hit them with your weapon and they are getting your base weapon damage and 150 additional damage over the next 10ish or so seconds... No need for giant 1 hit kill spells... And for many enemies, use the same variation, but with area affect of like 5m...

And damage spells aren't the only spells... There is a spell for pretty much anything, and once you join the mages guild, you can create your own spells... So always have some type of summon spells, even something as simple as an imp helps because they are attacking the imp instead of you... There are spells to cause enemies to attack each other, you can summon armor onto yourself for additional protection, you can vanish, you can trap enemies souls into soul shards (and then use them to recharge your gear)...

Just make sure you use the little action wheel that virtually no one ever uses... It is a little wheel on the d-pad if I remember and you get 8 slots to map equipment and spells... Just map your key spells to it and switch to them as needed...

You could always do what I did... turn the difficulty slider all the way down & just breeze through the main quest :P

Seriously I liked the game, but I can't imagine playing it for hundreds of hours like many people have. I clocked about 25 hours then I got bored & sold it.

That's not very helpful, lol. I think it's more helpful to say beware of being infected, which you risk any time you encounter vampires. A lot of gamers don't realize (or don't notice the text when it pops up letting them know they've been infected) and they keep playing without knowing what trouble they are in. If you continue to keep playing and don't notice you'll find out too late. Early in the game it can be a nightmare as you'll have to go through a protracted and difficult process to obtain a cure. You will not be able to go outside during the day without burning up and eventually scaring away anyone who gets a good look at you. Pay attention to the potions and try to make sure you are carrying ones to cure disease etc with you at all times, and check your current status often to see what is affecting you. Vampirism can be fun in the game, but only if you choose it and in general only later in the game. It's not a glitch - maybe there are glitches related to it no doubt, but I never encountered any in two complete play throughs.

I felt overwhelmed at first as well but once I got used to the game it felt more natural, but it is a massive game that takes forever to beat. And why do you read all the books, you don't have to. :? Just ask the mage leader for a mission.

Don't feel like you ever have to do anything - you don't. Just play the game and explore. Enjoy, it's a beautiful experience and more than worth your time.

Yes read up on vampires and learn to NEVER become one. If you want to be a vampire then make a new game because there is a glitch that makes it impossible to cure yourself.

You can always rely on the scroll glitch to multiply items you have. You can't dupe stolen items though, and some unique items like theApotheosis staff from rindir's store can't be duped either. To scroll dupe, get 2 scrolls of one spell and one of another (at the start of the game, I usually have enough gold to buy 2 Flare scrolls from Mystic Emporium in the Market district, you should have a scroll or twoin your inventory before you exit the sewers). Highlight the 2 scrolls, hit X twice, highlight the other scroll and hit square to drop it. instead of dropping one scroll you'll drop two. Repeat this process for more scrolls and use this glitch to dupe some items you can sell. Be careful what you dupe, items like lockpicks, sigil stonesand certain foods/alchemy ingredients can lag the game if you dupe too many. I usually never dupe anything more than 10 at a time unless its arrows. The best items to dupe for fast money is rings or amulets, since they weight nothing and have alot of value.

Give this game a chance TC, its alot of fun once you know what to do. I still play it, and I still have fun.

Don't worry it'll go away soon. Gold will come as you do quests get items, etc., you can easily get thousands. Andyou can just look at the local map.

I also hate how overwhelming the game feels. At least Morrowind has Sedya Neen (spell?) The trick to making these open world games NOT feel overwhelming, is slowly increasing the size of the world. Final Fantasy 12 did this well, with the world slowly opening up as you progressed in the story. If the game's leveling system didn't scale it would also be a lot better. If that happened, you could start out in a small(ish) district about one tenth the size of the full map, and have to do quests to get to a certain level or point in the story where it opens up.

EDIT: You can fix the vampire cure glitch on the GOTY edition, by changing the language of your system to German (other languages may work too) and completing the quest, you can then change back.

No I tried that it doesn't work. I've even sent my save file to someone else to let them try it and still no luck I just started a new game. My first playthrough was as a redguard so I didn't know about it until it was too late.

I believe it said that on the UESP wiki, or on the UESP forums. Either way, you can just rent out a regular version of Oblivion (if you have GOTY) or un-install Shivering Isles when you get the disease. The bug is in the Shivering Isles.

I'd trade it in for Fallout 3.
