Yea I guess I found out today that the new $400 PS3 80G can not play PS2 games...

I just cannot believe this, I bought it from Best Buy a month ago and I asked if it was backwards compatable and they said yep, it's the 80G. Oh but when I try to put in MGS 2 I get a nice little question mark. Yes Mr. Question what indeed does give here?

I figured the price had been lowered some more because it didn't come with a game. Ha ha!

So yea I'm just a little pissed. If it wasn't for Bluray I'd say PS3s are total over expensive crap. And now that I look at the box, oh yes there's a little box of text saying not compatable with PS2 software...

They really should put a big asterisk or something on the front of the box saying "CANNOT PLAY PS2 GAMES!!!".

Damnit I knew I should have bought the $500 MGS 4 bundle.

Sorry to hear this. You bought the new 80 gig Version. It will be kinda hard finding the MGS4 Bundles now.I had a chance to buy one aswell but I did not want to wait until it came out so I bought the 40 gig instead. But it is not really a bad thing. You still got a PS3 and you should be happy. If you can just bust out your old PS2 or find one on Amazon or Ebay if you need to.Not sure why people are buying PS3's to play PS2 titles.Yes it is Nice to have BC for when you find an older game you want but it is not the end of the world.

Well, I guess it's not entirely your fault because you did ask and they gave you false information...

Because Sony shouldn't have taken the option away completely if they started out with it. Finding ways to drop the price is fine, but you don't do it at the expense of functionality without having a fully functional choice as well.

Just hook up your PS2 again, what's the big deal?

I got the 60 gig when the system was released, and yes I play God of War on it all the time. I still wish I hadn't because this version has so much extra space, and I install all my games to my hard drive so that's ideal.

That's why I do plenty of research and know what I'm getting into when I make any big purchase (consoles for example). It does suck that they misinformed you - either they knew and purposefully lied to make a sale, or they didn't know - either of which is entirely possible because the former happens all the time, and the latter isn't out of the question becuase Sony has changed their console specs around a ridiculous amount that it's easy to get confused.

If it's worth anything, I do still think that Sony will patch backwards-compatibility back in to all PS3s through a firmware update at some point in the future. I think it might happend around the time that they finally cut support for the PS2 and it's sales finally die down. Again, this is just purely speculation, and I have no proof of this either way.

Well I got it like when it just came out, so I guess nobody knew yet. And unfortunately I did not examine the box very carefully, because it was also the last one at the store. And I had been trying to get the MGS 4 bundle for a while, but everytime I was able to go to the store they were sold out.

*Sigh* I really am starting to think it's better to just buy everything off the net. That way I know exactly what I'm getting. Written reviews are much more helpful then any salesman I ever met. But this shouldn't be a surprise. Sure shipping can be a little bit expensive, but with the price of gas, and the fact that you can get stuff cheaper off the net typically just seems like a no brainer. Heck can even get free shipping a lot these days. Although how long this will last I can't say, next year may be very different.

What I don't get is why PS1 stuff will work with CECHK01 and how come PS2 stuff can't. That just seems silly.

So I can play the original MGS, but 2 and 3 nope. Is there something about running PS2 games that requires like $100 worth of hardware or something? I'm just not following.

Really if this new $400 model could play PS2 games I think it would sell much better.

I mean yes I got the PS3 to play PS3 games (And Bluray), but there are a lot of PS2 games that are fond to my heart and not being able to play em now, well sucks. I unfortunately do not have my PS2 anymore, I do have a few games that I thought I was still going to be able to play.

Well I guess I hope Sony releases some Update for PS2 Backwards Compatible, cause I'm frankly not going to dish $100 to buy a PS2 again anytime soon.

I agree. I think Sony will allow these PS3s at one point to play PS2 games.

Never trust a single source for your information especially if it is a store employee. Usually they will be biased toward a certain brand and/or product. They will either not know anything, or they will intentionally mislead you.

If you bought it fairly recently and still want to try to find a BC one, try taking it back to best buy. I don't think they usually take stuff back on the premis that you just don't want it anymore, but since they mislead you, you should be able to do it. You might have to fight just a little, but it should work. Then you'll have the problem hunting down an older PS3, which might be a problem if you don't want to go used. Personally though, the BC isn't that big of a deal, especially since I still have my PS2.

Because not everyone wants to have several game-consoles out when only one should suffice. How hard is that to understand?

What he said. It drives me nuts when people complain about lack of backwards compat.

Or you could've done research like most of us smart buyers & would've seen what you were buying ahead of time.

That would be the ideal and intelligent thing to do. However, a lot of people aren't as meticulous, particularly younger folks. They forget, and it's the company's job to make sure EVERYTHING is out there in the open to make it easy for customers, in every field.
