I turned on my PS3 by pressing the eject button. The fans start going insane, a green light appears, and then it turn to flashing red. I stare at it wide-eyed and terrified. I quickly grab the laptop, look it it up and scream because the impendin doom. I finally say what the hell and try to turn it on and off. It works!

So my question is, what the **** was that PS3?

think you may have made it do like a auto-fan turbo mode thing briefly. Just to blast all dust out

yeah you may have accidentally activated the auto clean function. It boosts the fan so it blows out unwanted dust particles

Yeah, he did a fan test.

"She" did a fan test.

Will it do that everytime I turn it on now or just when I "test" it. How exactly did I end up testing it anyways.

It's not a fan test, it's a diagnostic test. That's why you won't find it in the manual. Doing it once in a while will be fine, but long term use could be bad.

With the PS3 on standby press and hold the eject button and you get the fan test. Apparently it's ok for all SKUs from the 40Gb onwards
