First off, you should know that this system is very reliable. It has run from tempteratures of 0 - 120F (I believe it was 120, it was at least above 100) and many people have been running it for several months straight.
With that said, I am still very careful with it. Whenever I am done with it, if it is not in a safe place, I put it in one. You can turn off it with the controler, but I still hit the switch (saves a tiny bit of energy I guess) I have played it for around 7 hours in one sitting before and it has ran just fine.
Games that seem to be reccomended:
FPS: Resistence , RV6
RPG: Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Racing: Ridge Racer
Sports: NFL '08 and Madden '08 (both my preferences at least)
Fighting: Virtual Fighter 5
And hook it up to the internet (it's free!) and download demos and videos from the store, it'll help you pick out your first game. I would suggest not to stock up too heavily on the games out, save your money and wait for games such as Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion GOTY, CoD 4, Lair all of which come out later this year (I know I didn't get all of the good ones, but my brain froze, you would think coffee would help that, haha)
Also, rent a blu-ray (especially if you have a HDTV) and check out how amazing it is.
My lastsuggestion (I know I am getting a little long winded) is to HAVE FUN!
any other questions, just let me know!

Pop in a Blu Ray, sit back and enjoy 1080p. Or play the two games that are out for the system, RFoM and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.
hey im getting a ps3 in a few hours what do i need to know , what should i do first as i turn the system off , i have internet access so what should i do.mikester585
You mean "turn the system on" I assume? First you will set up your video and sound. Next if you have ANY thoughts of using the PS3 to install UNIX you should do the "partition hard drive and Install second OS" thing first. But you don't have to and its not important at all to play games and other PS3 stuff, so don't get yourself all confused into this if you don't know much about this or don't care. Next set up your network settings and then a PSN account. Its free with no strings attatched. It may need to update the firmware first over the internet network connection before you can set up a PSN account. If you don't need to update the firmware before setting up an account, do this next then anyway. Current firmware allows new features and compatibility with your PS3.
After all that enjoy!

You should do some research. I mean my god...don't you check out things before you buy them? I'm seeing more & more people come here and ask us owners "what should they do with the ps3 or should they get it?" Stop being lazy & look things up on the net.
I did this too, it helps to find out what the owners say about it as well. That is part of the research.

thankyou , im greatfull for all your comments , if you wouldn't mind saying what is your most favorite thing to do on the
ps3 obviously gaming is oone so wat else
If you have an HDTV make sure to buy either a HDMI cable or Component cables. The cables that come with the system are cheap and designed for SDTV setups. I suggest buying Sony brand cables. My first game was RFoM and I can tell you, you'll be impressed by the gameplay, sound, and replayability. The wireless was somewhat tricky for me to setup, however after about 30 minutes I was surfing. Make sure you buy a decent router if you dont have one already. I have a D-Link and it seems to work great with few drops from the network. Other things to consider are the Blu-Ray disc playability and the ability to access media files from your PC. These are very cool features. Other games I suggest buying are Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Madden 08'. Heavenly Sword has not been released yet but the demo is very impressive. The only downside right now is the lack of games for the PS3. Since its fairly new, this is to be expected. By Christmas time, a number of new games will be released. After owning two Xbox360's both of which failed after the first two weeks (ring of death & scorched power supply), I decided on the PS3. The Xbox 360 should be pulled from the market. I was especially concerned with fires or damage to my homes electrical system.
I love using my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player (obviously), but I also have a LOT of music on it. One cool thing about the PS3 is that it not only upconverts video, but it also upconverts sound now with the newest firmware updates. It also supports SACD. For any skeptics out there, go get Dark Side of the Moon on SACD and listen to it. You'll notice the greatly enhanced sound quality.
Also, the media server, while not as streamlined as the 360's, works well. What is even cooler about the Media Server feature is that if you have a PSP, you can use Remote Play and use the PSP to access your PC files from anywhere in the world. Once they update the firmware to allow the PSP to turn the PS3 on and off through Remote Play, this feature will become indispenseable.
The PS3 may not be the best gaming console at the moment, but it is hands down the best piece of hardware you can buy. It does everything and does it well. By next year there will be a mountain of good games available and Blu-Ray will be the next gen HD format of choice.
What I love about it the most is that you can legitimately build a high quality home theater around this console. That's more than you can say of other competitors.
i have wireless and the ps3 is about 70% signal strenght , is that good enough for fast downloading , or should i use a ethernet cabl,
