It helps eliminate load times, or at least shorten them.

From my understanding, alot of it has to do with the way the games are created, Bluray discs while they can hold alot more than a DVD they also can't be read at as fast a rate, whereas loading from the HDD is much faster. Some games are made to run much more effeciently than others, such as uncharted or killzone 3, so you have little to no load times and not much of an install file.. But most games aren't made this way for various legitimate reasons so dumping a large amount of the game to the HDD shortens load times and allows them to basically do more at once..

yeah its the load times basically. PS3 launched a with a really slow blu ray drive so installs are often required to get just decent load times. Without them some games would really have unacceptable load times hence the mandatory installs. Im sure Blu Ray drives have improved in speed since but they have to design what the original ps3 launched with so their hands are tied.

Completely agree. Red Dead Redemption and Gran Turismo 5 come to mind.

I'm no expert on the subject, as it doesn't bother me. But I've always assumed it was due to developer optimization and technique. Perhaps some are just better than others.

I mean, God of War 3 has no install and low load times but that game's scale, graphics, and frame rate are top notch while lesser games have huge installs? I thinks its just because they can and didn't take the time to properly optimize it for the PS3. Aside from GT5, most unbearable installs were with multiplats.

To be honest, I wish all games had mandatory installs. And I personally install games the second I see the option for it (via menus.. etc). Why? Well for one thing having data on the HDD which therefore suggest that the Blu-Ray drive is being utilizied less. Which would inturn lead to the drive itself lasting longer.

The Blu Ray drive is slow... like 2X. However, the PS3 can read data off it's hard drive much, much faster. So without installs, you would have to wait forever for levels etc. to load.

Eh, I wish you would at least have the option to install all games. Killzone 2 and Call of Juarez Bound in Blood come to mind where I really hated the constant freezing for a few seconds whenever you reached a checkpoint.
