can someone give me the exact rundown on how the bc is going to work with the 80gb version of the ps3 compared to the 60gb. I heard that the 80gb will use an emulator. Does this mean that the ONLY way to play ps1 and ps2 games on the 80 gb is through emulation and that it WON'T play the actual older games themselves? And therefore the only way to use the actual ps1 and ps2 discs is to buy a 60gb system? Hope that made sense. Thanks for the help

yes it will play the actuall older games it will just take some firmware updates to make it possible for the whole entire library to be played

right now with the EE chipset in the 60GB's it is at 98% BC, without it it will be around 70-75% for awhile until they start really pushing out them firmware updates

so that means the 80gb version will allow you to play with both an emulation AS WELL as the actual ps1 and 2 discs themselves? Where the 60gb version just allows you to play the ps1 an 2 discs w/out the emulator? I don't have a ps3 yet but plan on getting one soon and that's why i have these questions. I just want to know which one to get. I havea pretty decent amount of ps1 and 2 games that i will still play and i just want to know if the actual discs will play on either of the ps3's (60 or 80gb)

you have a misunderstanding of what software emulation is on consoles. it's not like the NES emulator that you download for your PC that plays NES games that you download from the internet. it's not like that.

on ALL PS3's, you put the PS1/PS2 game in the disc tray, and the game plays. The way that it works is the difference between the 60GB and the 80GB.

basically all they mean by emulation with this is that it will make the actual disc work

Didn't they already start taking the chips out of the newer 60 gigs though?

yeah i got that. I have a ps2 and play my ps1 games on it. If it's the same on both the 60 and 80gb version than what are they talking bout with this difference from a "chip" to an emulator. If both function the same way, is there a difference?

the 60GB PS3 uses the actual PS2 "Emotion Engine" chip(the PS1 hardware is built into the PS2 chip) on it's motherboard to play the games. this makes almost every PS1/PS2 game work.

the 80GB PS3 uses a software package that emulates the PS2 hardware to play the games. It does this automatically when you put the game in the disc tray. However, this makes less games backward compatible because Sony has to create the emulation for each game.

the discs will play on 80gb - though there is NO ps2/1 hardware in the ps3, hence needing the emulation
