Borderlands is a really fun on-line co-op game. In my opinion it's more of a shooter than an rpg, but if you think you would like a 1st person shooter that gives you the ability to customize your abilities you would probably really enjoy it.
Demon's Souls-- has a beautifully integrated co-op system.

No it doesn't, it's an absolute nightmare to try to play with your friends. They really needed a Green phantom set-up where you both had 75% health and you respawned at 5% of your total souls.
i hear this ones great for co-op, i'm going to play it with a buddy soon as well. and as for Demon's Souls, i wouldn't do that for co-op. its still a great game to play, but i wouldn't buy it if looking for a game to play with a buddy.

It's good for coop, just don't expect it to be good on the replayability/weapon collecting.

Seriously guys... White Knight Chronicles would be his best bet. It has a huge online quest system that is literally as in depth as the actual single player story, which is something like 100 hours. It's the best Co-op RPG available.

Probably the fact that you have to contact your friends through the slightly clunky XMB, and you can't just directly join a friends game.
