I have that receiver and I highly recommend it. I has some great features, of course it decodes the next-gen sound formats, and it definitely sounds good paired with some nice speakers. It doesn't have a phono input though so if you want to hook up a turn table you are going to need a pre-amp. Also, it only decodes the next-gen sound formats when it is sent to the receiver in bitstream format, no big deal though, LPCMs are fine. And also, it doesn't matrix Dolby True HD 5.1 into 7.1, but again not really a big deal, at least not to me. Anyway, if you're looking for a good receiver at a good price this is it!

Bitstream from my understanding is the raw digital sound format and right now, there are very few HD DVD/Blu-ray players that can send it in that form, instead it is converted to LPCMs, which is uncompressed anyway so it's really the same thing, the only thing is that you won't see "Dolby True HD" light up on the receiver it will just read "PCM". And the whole matrix thing... if you are playing a source that is Dolby Digital True HD 5.1, the receiver won't 'convert (matrix)' the 5.1 to 7.1, the only way for it to play Dobly True HD 7.1 is if the source is Dolby True HD 7.1. Similar to what Dolby Digtial EX does to Dolby Digital 5.1 or PLIIx does to PLII sources.

Stay away! from Bose crap cubes and small speakers since piston area of drivers is very important with 6 and 1/2 inch woofers/midranges being minimum consideration for drivers. L,R,C,LS,RS,CS.

12 inch subwoofers minimum consideration for subwoofers with two 12 inch subs being good but four 12 inch subs being much, much better. (some friends do prefer four 15 inch subs versus four 12 inch subs).

Hi pablito3. I'm not sure what your budget is but consider looking at Denon and Yamaha. A little more expensive and not as cool looking, but a far better receivers for the money. I recommend spending some money on audio equipment, it's one of the few things you can buy and be happy with for a long long time that doesn't need upgrading very often. I have my speakers that are about 10 years old now and spent a lot of money on them, but they sound amazing and will probably last me another good 10 years.

Absolutely, it's just physics. You can't move enough air for good sound with tiny speakers. Unless you have an insane amount of power like the sunfire subwoofers. Do you build your sub? I have an SVS sub and love it.
