To tell you the truth both game have their strengths and weaknesses.
guitar Hero 3- If you plan on playing mostly solo or dont usually have friends over, you should pick this option. Even though it has co-op, youll need to wait until they decide to release extra guitars already. You can also play online with others, but for some people it's spotty at best, due to the difficulty to get into games(not all the times). So if you want to just rock out on the guitar solo, Guitar hero 3 would be your best bet. i have Guitar Hero 3, only cause I can;t afford RB at the moment. I'm kinda getting bored with it, downloadable content has been rather slow and lacking for GHIII
Rock Band- If you plan on playing eith friends constantly, then i would suggest Rock Band. I do not have this title, but i have played it many times at my friend's house. Even if the song selection is not as good(close though) as GH3, the fact that most songs are licensed(not those crappy cover-up songs ) is a plus. It does have solo career letting you play either Guitar,drums,vocals, or bass. Plus it's career mode is a little more fleshed out than GH's but it feels lacking without having the whole band playing at once. ock Band is 70 clams more than GH, so if your willing to take the plunge, I think you'll enjoy this title. Plus there are many songs to download on Rock Band with more songs still on the way, so it never gets old, as long as you can pony up the dough to keep your song list updated :)
