Optical Out Question

i have my ps3 conntected to tv through hdmi and surround system connected to tv through optical. would it be better if i connect optical from surround directly into ps3?

You know I'm not sure if there would be a difference, but thats how I would do it, HDMI to TV and Optical to reciever. If you can just do it, you can only win ;)

Sadly I have to use the RCA cables for sound still, my dated reciver dosen't have HDMI or Optical.

I dont use a receiver for sound as I primarily use my Turtle Beach headset, but I can tell you one thing...

The less inputs/outputs that you have your setup running through, the better. I would always strive for a direct connection.

If you can bypass using the TV as the optical output and instead directly connect optical out of the PS3 then I would consider this the optimal setup.

I usually connect my tv to my sound system so I don't need to change the setup all the time if I want to bring the sound from the tv to my speakers or headphones.
