Since Half Life 2 is such a story-driven game, will I feel lost if I haven't played Half Life 1? I mean, someone wouldn't want to play MGS 4 without having played the previous games, so if it's anything like that...

You'd probably feel lost initially even if you played HL1, because Gordon Freeman barely knows what's been happening in his absence. That said, I don't think you need to have played the original, all you need is some of the basics like how there was an incident at Black Mesa labs and aliens started teleported in.

However, Half-Life in my book, is one of the most important corner stones in gaming history, so you should really take the time to play it anyways.

When I got it for Xbox 360, I hadn't played Half-Life, but you catch up pretty quick since the story-line for HL2 is different....I did notice some references to HL, but I didn't pay much attention bc I was having too much fun playing and shooting things. I still am buying it for PS3 now that my Xbox is no more.

Yeah I was thinking of picking it up since it's only like 10 bucks for a used PS2 copy. Does it still hold up well?

The game play holds up well, graphics are a bit dated. But its a good game to have in your collection. (you can get it off steam for cheap if you have a some credit)

Can't really talk about the PS2 version, but I still play the PC version from time to time and the game never ceases to amaze me.

No, because it would be even more embarassing for them when the game had framerate issues in HL: Source :P

***slight spoilers ahead***

The vortigaunts of Xen had been enslaved by the combine as well, but after Freeman killed the Nihilanth, some managed to find refuge on earth and join the resistance.
