This is in regards to this topic UK PSPs mobile-izingĀ (Hope that works, first try)

Is it possible to turn the psp into a cell phone? Wouldn't you need some kind of hardware add-on to make it send and receive cell signals? From the sounds of this article (see above), its talking about running all that stuff over the internet like from hotspots and stuff. OR would you be able to do some update that turns the infrastructure signal thing into a cellular signal thing.... or is it the same. lol I dont know and this is why i buy things and not make them. I have a really crappy cell andĀ I would like for my psp to replace it. as long as i can get calls during gameplay.

This is where I read about it. I'd assume that they would use VOIP (voice over IP) rather than traditional cellular technology. This could easily be done over the existing WiFi transceiver. As you correctly note, the current PSP does not have the physical hardware to connect to cellular networks. Presumably, they would use some Skype-like software to enable being able to place and receive phone calls over the internet but I'd be surprised if it also worked during gameplay.

Ā

Here is a link to the news article that explains how you will be able to make VoIP calls on the PSP.Ā  Counds pretty sweet to me, I just hope that it allows cross-platform calls and that it doesn't cost too much.

Completely different: The NGage was a decent phone with a crappy game system grafted on PSP is a very good gaming system (IMO) which will have crappy phone functionality grafted on :)

well said. this is why

PSP>NGage

its a lot hard to do this in the US with lots of competing providers and more spaced out hotspots than EU. i would love to have phone service for the psp.Ā

I would much rather have a crappy phone attached to a great gaming device than a crappy gaming device attached to a phone
