Sorry to have to post this news, I don't even know why this situation would have happened. How big a difference could there be between the NTSC and PAL PS2 chips? Anyway, it seems Sony is going the software emulation route for European PS3 backwards compatibility. Original news article:

http://kotaku.com/gaming/sony/pal-ps3-backwards-compatability-gimped-[update]-239076.php

Follow-up link to Sony's announcement:

http://www.scee.presscentre.com/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=4331&NewsAreaID=2

Maybe they can throw some upscaling in if this is truly what is happening. Still doesn't make any real sense, though...

There is already a thread to discuss this, please do look before posting or else we'll end up like we always do... with a million threads talking about the same stuff.

What its saying and what Kotaku didnt mention is that the Software emulation is coming to all PS3s, but the euroe ones will be first. The software isnt 100% yet but as they update it compat will increase. Dont listen to Kotaku, they do nothing but twist things.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The PS3 is already over 97% BC. I am sure there are a few Europe titles that don't work. All this is saying is that, if certain Europe titles don't work, SCEE is not going to spend resources trying to fix games. The PAL PS3's are still going to get firmware upgrades like everybody else that will fix some games. Let's wait to see which games actually have a problem before saying how bad this is. If there is only 5 games that don't work, and those 5 games were the 5 worst selling titles, does it really matter that they don't work?

NO! you don't understand at all!! What this is saying is that Sony is bankrupt, it's failed badly, they're begging MS to buy them out, they actually lost more money than they made on the PS1 & 2, they are acknowledging that the other  console is a better buy, the PS3 is a disaster and are scraping it all together for this gen, they're not sure if they'll even venture into making a PS4 and that they sur0zxxx!!!11!!. How come you don't see this? After all, every troll on this site sees it plain as day. You need to comprehend English better OK?

- in case you missed it, very heavy on the sarcasm.

1. It will be fixed, just like it was in NA.
2. MOST games will still work
3. Since you already have a PS2, just keep it 3 months longer, that's more than it took for it to be fixed in NA.
4.
All big games will surely be Sony's priority, so you only have chances
of having problems if you like some darker games that no one played.
5.
The PS3 is released with Resistance, Motorstorm, Oblivion, FEAR and
more. You'll have enough on your hands to keep of the PS2 THE game you
want to play if fixed.

People around here just like to slap Sony for any reasons without wanting to get the fact rights.

Well before we all go linching Sony for this we actually need to get some facts.

They say limited BC. That could mean that 75% of PS2 titles work out of the box, and all the high profile titles at that. IF 100% BC meant 98% here in NTSC land, maybe limited is not nearly as bad as you are all thinking. It is lovely to see just how little faith people have in Sony, even though they have proven 2 times now that they have what it takes to make a console. And it is only a matter of time before the PS3 shines.

Also it seems that people have forgot that when Sony mentioned they would be using software emulation in the future, they claimed we would see an improvement in visuals of PS2 games. So is this entirely a bad thing? Less working titles, but they all have improved graphics?

Put your pitchforks away till more info surfaces.

And look on the bright side, I can gaurentee even with a gimped PS3 BC list, you will still have thousands more BC titles then the compeditors console....

This isn't the end of the world, but its still fun to listen to fanboys try to smooth this over. Yes, it will be patched away in a little while, but Sony is once again delivering less than promised.

I'm just going to keep on posting the analyst prediction till some one takes it seriously
It's strange, for the first time, no one quotes the analyst...Oh wait, that's because that would make this not so bad for Sony, and no one cares about.

Surprisingly, however, initial analyst reaction to the move by SCEE has
been positive. In a note from the folks at Datamonitor, analyst Alex
Kwiatkowski said, "By utilizing the latest hardware Sony is able to
rationalize the number of components required. This move is
significant, as it will have a positive impact on the PS3's long-term
cost profile. By launching the PS3 in Europe with the new chassis, Sony
has at a stroke removed one of the barriers to future price reductions,
and providing it can make enough units available, Datamonitor believes
there will be sustained growth in PS3 ownership as new users seek to
benefit from the PS3's enhanced features and functionality."
