i recently made thread asking boiut whtehr to get a ps3 or not. the responses there managed to comvince me to get one but i ran into a major problem with my parents. My dad expressly forbade it the moment i mentioned it despite the fact that they will not pay a single cent and i am 17 turning 18 into half a year. his reasoning was that i have an xbox 360 and that they are basically the same thing. when i managed to convince him they were completely different. He then started to spout some stuff bout how one console was enuf and anothjer one would ruin my borthers grades and health. now my xbox is my room and i plan to put the ps3 there. i only let them on for a cuple of hours a week but my dad still wouldnt let up. hes beinh very stuborn bout it and so ive come to ask help from u guys. how can i convince him to let me get one. plz no troll answers and srry for the long read

When you turn 18, just buy it. If he complains, tell him that you're 18, it was paid with your money, and that it's not his problem.

Start saving money. By the time you save enough up you should be 18 and able to purchase it.

Tell your parents about BD-Rom movies and tell them PS3 "will change the way we see movies" or "PS3 is a console allright....but it also harbors the true 'successor' of DVD.....the BD standard and hardly any other multi functional machine can play BD roms".This may work.;)

Just get it and sneak it in. If your dad doesnt know the difference, then he won't know if you're playing on it or not. Just keep the actual system out of sight. :>

No it doesn't matter. Its not illegal to own one. He can't take it away but by the sound of your personality he will easily. Stop being such a kid about it. Tell him you want one , your gonna buy it. If he doesn't like it oh well.

Ask him once every few days with a good legitimate argument as to why it should be your decision, or the benefits of it. Do it maturely. If in like a week he's still doing it, go to him and ask him if he knows where to buy a good rock of crack for the same price. Then ask him which he'd prefer.

I'm not trolling either. This is what I would have done. Actually I just would have bought it if I was 17 and had the money. I wouldn't have even asked. Your parents sound strict. My mom would have been like "what's that?" and I would have told her and that would be the end of it. I'm sure she would have been amazed that I saved up the money at that age myself and wasn't asking her to buy it for me.

I have both systems at the moment, so i never had that problem. Find a good deal on the ps3 and tell your dad its a great deal. I sold my 360 on craigslist for $250 and bought a ps3. I then missed my ps3 and bought one from gamestop online for $100. (they had a sale). If you can justify to your father that you found a good deal than he might obliged. If he doesnt then o well. Give him time to get used to the idea. About 3 years ago i tried convincing my dad to let me get gears 2. When he researched it he was super pissed at me for even asking. About a year later he didnt really care.

I think its good that you are respecting your fathers wishes while living with him. Thats what a good son is suposed to do, but when you turn 18 your an adult. You should be able to make some choices on your own. At the same time he is right. The 360 is enough... What about that poor boy in africa without a poweranger action figure, or GI joe doll...(I want to end with a low blow for fun)

Serioussamik

This seems to be the best and most honest answer. You could also tell them it's more like and additional PC because of the browser, printer, upgradable HDD and other PC-like functions that the PS3 possess. Bottom line though kid, your parents are just looking out for you....trust me, 10yrs from now you'll be thanking them.

Wow, um maybe offer to let them use it to play HD movies in your main room? They can also use it to stream netflix and rent movies too. Those are the uses they could get out of it. Show them LBP and how you can play as a family. Personally I think that is crap. It is YOUR money and once you are 18 it shouldn't matter, nor should it now. I just bought mine without even asking.

Don't let it affect your grades and your brother too.

You may have to let go of your 360 to own the PS3.
You can always switch back, it isnt going anywhere.

Educate your parents about blu-ray movies and pictures and move/casual games..
They may like it too.

Aw, I was going to tell you to kill your parents in their sleep...:(

Introduce the PS3 as an entertainment device. Propose to buy/rent some BRs and have family movie nights with it. Show your dad it's more than for playing games, but as something more that he can enjoy as well.

when you turn 18, you are an adult and when you are an adult with a full time job then you can buy whatever the hell you want without needing anybody elses approval because its your money. if you buy a ps3 with your own money when you turn 18 then he can't punish you or take it away because he didn't buy it, you did. basically what i'm saying is buy it with your own money and if he doesn't like it then screw him. he may be your father but its your money, not his so he can't tell you what you can and can't buy with your money

man up.

if ur paying for it, it's urs. end of story.

I've been there, my parents are a little overbearing, when I got a 360 they made this argument and I said it was my money, my purchase, then they said I was using their internet, so i started paying for that, then they said i was using their electricity and i laughed in there faces.

good times.

Pretty much what others are saying...I mean its one thing sneaking drugs or something into his house...but this is a game system which is not illegal in any way. Once your 18 your an adult. Your balls are going to have to drop at some point and your parents will in fact have to deal with you being all grown up. Just buy the system when you can

I don't think you guys realize that he said this already isn't an option for whatever reason most likely that going behind his dad's back could cause his dad to get mad and some parents overreact and would kick him out of the house or whatever. So as long as he is living in his dad's house then he'll have to go by his rules and im assuming that he would still like to keep an okay relationship with him not just go all out and be rebellious or whatever. (this is to all people who are saying man up and get it or whatever.)

if you favor the ps3 over the xbox then sell your xbox. Your dad was quite right that you don't need 2 systems even if there were some exclusive games

this. also, kinda sad how you're letting this insignificant problem ruin your life. sorry if you don't like the answer, but it's the truth. and for heaven's sake, the best times of your life are when you're 17/18, what the hell are you doing mulling over a ps3? especially when you have an xbox already? get your priorities straight, and get a job.

So... I want to give a serious answer, but that spelling and grammar... gughghhhhhhhh.

First, learn to type. If you are dyslexic I'll feel like a jerk, but still.

Second, if you are turning 18, you shouldn't have to rely on them so much, buy it yourself. Get a job, or maybe be super nice I guess.

I had a friend that was 14 and he wanted a PS3 as well. They way we convinced his dad was I would go over to his house and hook up my PS3 and just casually show him how awesome it was. His dad asked me if the PS3 could play blu-ray and if it was really that much better looking. Simply put we played one of his favorite old movies on blu-ray and that was that my friend now has a PS3,...and a little brother that complains about having his turn sometimes.

I see no reason why you would want both consoles; unless they become a major part of your life, you won't have the time to fully appreciate both. I got given an Xbox 360 as a gift but sold it because I already had/and still have a PS3. I enjoy my Ps3 more than my Xbox. If you would enjoy a Ps3 more than an Xbox, then get rid of your Xbox. If you wouldn't enjoy it more than your Xbox, then there's no need to get one. Also, your parents have your interest at heart. I'm a year older than you and I still take their advice. Just make sure that's all it is, advice. You don't want them to start living your life for you.

No one here knows your parents here better than you do. If you can't think of a way to appeal and reason with them, there is no way a random internet stranger will.

Is there any way you can like keep it to yourself? Away from your brothers or whomever? Do you have your own personal TV where you can just play it in privacy and not bother anyone? If so I can't see how anyone could reasonably tell you no.

If that doesn't work, you may just be out of luck. You do have a 360 and if you have the money to buy a PS3 then you surely have the money to keep up an interesting and varied collection with all the multiplats available.

You could trade in your 360 if you really, really wanted the PS3 and start playing multiplats on there, plus not paying for your online, but I doubt you want to do that.

lol *cough cough* i call bs. then what was all that "my dad won't pay a single cent" business in your first post? just put it there for no reason?

even in the event that you actually do have a job, you still need to grow up and make some decisions for yourself instead of waiting for your dad's approval for something as simple as doing what you want with your own money.

Here's an idea: don't get a PS3. Crazy right?

Not really. Some people here will disagree with me, but other than a few exclusives the differences between the 360 and PS3 are actually quite minor when it comes to games. You already have the 360, just stick with it. No need to spend more money on another console just to play a few exclusives, plus you don't want to risk getting in trouble with your dad. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

YES! Tell them about Blue Ray movies. Also, I don't know if you have Xbox Live or not, but tell them that online is free and that it'll do nothing but save money. You can even trade in your 360 for a PS3 so it'll save even more money. That is, if you plan on getting rid of your 360.

What would it matter whether he reads a book or plays a game?

One waste of time is another, who cares.

Having multiple systems doesn't mean anything you are implying.

[QUOTE="Deaho"]

man your dad is right,ps3 and xbox 360 is way too much,I am 23 years old and I love games but I always tell my self I don't need to be addicted to games thats why I never get a psp or even an xbox 360 besides my ps3 ,because playing so much of games is not good for my health plus its just a waste of time,u need to read more books better than playing games all the time .

trust me,games is not every thing in life and don't put this as ur target.

whiskeystrike

What would it matter whether he reads a book or plays a game?

One waste of time is another, who cares.

Having multiple systems doesn't mean anything you are implying.

Man I am not telling him to not play games but in the same time not to waste all of his time in playing games or thinking about it,I love games and I love to play games in my free time but I love to do that wisley by playing 2 hours per day or even not play in other days.

about the book part ,u can pick up a book that teach u some thing but u will never pick up a game that teachs u some thing.

multiple systems means wasting more time in games other than doing other stuff.

Perhaps work on your writing and language skills and once you've shown your parents how you've learnt to spell and use correct grammar they may come around. But seriously dude, there's not a lot you can do about it. If you don't like their rules you can either: 1. Go behind their back. 2. Try and convince them otherwise. 3. Move out and make your own rules.

From the sound of your parents, it sounds like the only way you'll ever get exactly what you want is when you move out. So...get to movin'MC-Reap

Sucks to be in your shoes right now, it shouldn't be this tough at all, but from what I read from your post, your dad won't accept the PS3 even if you bought it with your own money, which is very bad.

Maybe your dad should just tell ur lil bro not to be on that PS3 if u had it. When you are 18, you are an adult, you are going to have to be one. its good to respect your parents and all, but seeking approval for even something like this is just sad. Stand up for yourself, if you lack the courage for that, then move out of the house.

I talked to my day and he has agreed to let me purchase a ps3. It seems that i asked him at a bad time when he was angry about somethin and now that he has cooled down he is much more reasonable. So thannks everyone for the help

There isn't much you can do unless you wait until you're 18 then buy one yourself. I can't understand why your Dad is so against another console though...

well, id say just get a job and buy your own. when i was your age, i wanted a n64, and my parents said they wouldnt get it(they dont believe in video games and never supported the addiction). I had a job, i took a paycheck and bought 1. never heard a word. now i have a ps3 and a Wii...and my son wants a xbox360. well, too bad. if he wants one, save his money and he can get one.

That would be my initial thought as well. However, judging by the sound of the OP, he's not even remotely ready to be a big boy and should do whatever mummy and daddy say so that he can stay there for as long as possible. This whole thread is a quadruple face-palm.
