You need a PC monitor with at least a DVI port that is HDCP compliant, or a PC monitor with an HDMI port.

Unfortunately VGA doesn't work...at all.

Any cable connected to the PS3's HDMI port requires connection to a device with HDCP compliance.  The PS3 sends a handshake over the cable connceted to the HDMI port.  If the display device doesn't respond to the handshake you get a black screen.  VGA is not HDCP compliant. So HDMI to DVI cable + DVI/VGA adapter does not work.

The sockets match those plug ends so their shapes are the same, which is the reason I used those pictures. Neither cable is supplied with the PS3 but can be had for minimal extra cost. I purchased mine for $6. My guess would be your monitor does not have DVI with HDCP or an HDMI port.

The only adapter that would work is if you had an HDMI cable but your monitor only had DVI with HDCP.  Then you could use an HDMI to DVI adapter.
