(Inb4 "cool story bro")

So obviously with VGs being as popular as they are these days there are alot of "non-gamers" play games, but in the last couple years its become abundantly apparent, but never so much as this last week, (i'm manager at a locally owned gam store) this guy came in looking for some great "fighting games" on PS3 so I basically told him Super Street FIghter 4 and Tekken 6 were great, he bought them without much though, comes back two hours later practically yelling at me that I sold him some "s****y japanese crap, not a fighting game" he begins telling me how i scammed him and all this garbage, and I ask him just what he was looking for, this time he says "you know a fighting game, like with guns and war, what are you stupid!?" (yada yada, he demands a refund and a free game for the trouble and says something racist , at which point I tell him to "get the **** out of my store")

but that leads me to my point, in the age of the "idiot gamer" should they be printing the genre of the game on the cover? I mean its not just the idiots, but parents and old people, i mean more now than ever I'm having to explain what an FPS is (hell half the PC gamers that come in i have to explain what an RTS is, and not just the acronym, actually what "real time strategy" is!) should they be putting much more basic information on game cases?

Also, those of you who would consider yourselves core/hardcore (I know, labels, meh, its just easier) how often do you read the back of a case when you buy it? (aside from the specs ie install size, number of players etc)

If people can't be bothered with educating themselves, then there's nothing you can do that'll cange their ignorance. What, he didn't take a look at the pictures front and back to realize it's not a shooter? If he's that stupid, then you can print the genre in bold up front and he'll still think figters = shooters.

Metacritic mislabels new game Awesomenauts as a fighting game, so I don't have faith for typical forumers.

I noticed plenty of other metacritic problems in a thread a few days ago when a fanboy was using metacritic to count game genre's for everyone. Seems fine, until you clicked the link and I was appalled at the mislabeling of genres. :P

Part of the problem is that some games are smaller (low sales) and therefore people don't play them to notice they are not categorized correctly.

Another issue is publishers that are dishonest about the kind of game they created. They may put RPG on the cover, but it's really a very simple hack and slash with toned down with a tiny bit of RPG elements. Things like that are bound to confuse gamers.

Ha! Funny story, but no, I don't think they should cater towards "idiots" by adding extra information to the box art on the case. They'll just have to figure it out by themselves :P

Although, when I'm asked what I want for either a christmas or birthday present, it would probably aid my parents. I always fear the worst when opening a present and wondering briefly if it'll be the right one, or even for the right console for that matter lol.

Yeah, he didn't look at the back or anything, he took a glance at the front and threw a $50 on the counter.

Provide information. That's all. If people are too lazy to read it or ask good enough questions to get the answers they need, then they can take the consequenses and hopefully wise up til the next time.

That guy obviously didn't even look at the covers. Writing detailed explanations about the contents would have been meaningless. Backside texts and pictures usually have enough information to figure out what kind of game it is. If people don't even look at it, what can you do? Maybe the publishers could integrate some electronics into the cover. Like, as soon as someone touches the case an attractive voice gives a 5 minute long explanation about the genre and the unique specifics of this game. Or a video screen on the cover that shows a short gameplay trailer (with sound of course. Otherwise no one looks at it. Would be annoying to most customers but at least they won't be "scammed with some s***y crap."

That's crazy that that guy did that... In any case, I think that might be a pretty good idea. How could it hurt really. However, some games are still widely categorized improperly IMO (Mass Effect 2/3 being RPGs and Uncharted 1/2/3 being Action-Adventures)

Well, the examples you stated are not wrong though. Outside of the battle scenes Mass Effect/Uncharted definitely is a RPG/Action-Adventure that just happens to have TPS gameplay. Maybe we have to change to a system were we categorize each game into two genres - gameplay-genre and storytelling-genre, or something like that.

Yeah I agree and since this media we love so much is diferentiated from other forms of media due to its gameplay element, I believe that gameplay is what should determine what genre a game falls under. Uncharted, for example, has no adventuring or exploring within its gameplay and therefore should not be categorized as an action-ADVENTURE.

Mass Effect is a TPS, but even BioWare calls it an RPG, so not all of the blame is on the consumer.

No. I would've done the same thing if a person asked for a fighting game.

I didn't vote because none of the answers make sense to me. Game developers already cater to the mainstream. Mainly because mainstream brings in the dollars where as nitch games only bring in loyalty. And loyalty doesn't pay the bills. For example, Morrowind had a complex skill set and gave no direction. Skyrim condensed all the skills and added a guide markers and fast travel. No detective work needed what so ever. Anyway, you should have asked him for some examples.

Fighting could have meant Bayonetta, Way of the Samurai, Yakuza, God Hand, as well.

People who don't know their videogame genres. Should learn how can anyone not know the difference from a fighting game and a first person shooter?

Unless the PS3 has that guy's first ever console?

They guy in question didn't know what genres mean anyway, so labeling the game with genre wouldn't help him anyway. But yeah, consumers need to be education. It is your own fault if you're a moron.

but, he didnt know what Street Fighter was?? you dont have to be "non-gamer" to know what that is..its like "Mario", everybody knows who he is! but anyways that "wanna be gamer" (that's what i call them, they're posers) should have asked questions.

You think thats bad, once someone was buying Splinter Cell and asked me what kind of game it was, I said "stealth action third person shooter," and I then had to spend the next 3 minutes explaining to thme what both "stealth" and "third person" means, I almost just walked away in amazement of how stupid this person could possibly be. I mean seriously, how can you not know what the word "stealth" is, its not like its even a video game or media term or anything.

I find the gamers who get on their high horses, using 'hardcore' as badge of honour and say devs are/should be 'catering to the idiot gamers' pretty pathetic. All it reflects is that said people are insecure as hell, needing to distance themselves. Perhaps you should have asked him what kind of 'fighting games' he was looking for? It's pretty obvious when somebody walks into a game store and has no idea what they're talking about, as an employee you should probably be doing your best to ascertain exactly what they're looking for. However, his reaction was awful and I'm sorry about the treatment you received as a result of his lack of bothering to read.

I think you handled it right, he asked for fighting and that's what you gave him, he should have been able to look at those games and realized that they don't have any guns on the front or back. I think that game cases are good about showing what you will be doing in the game and they don't need to have a lable saying if they are RPG or FPS or whatnot. The consumer should be able to figure out what the game is about, the question they should be asking is if the game is actually any good or not.

Well its just easier saying hardcore than a long drawn out explanation of the level of devotion that particular gamer has towards gaming. Saying "fighting games" was a good indication that he knew what he was looking for, or at very least the genre, its perfectly normal to assume when a person asks for a specific thing that they know what it is.

To answer your question, no. People should use common sense and do a little research before spending money, especially this being the age of info. More power to you for dealing with the genral public everyday. My advice...keep a loaded glock under the counter just in case. People are getting crazierand crazier by the millisexcond these days.

i accepted long ago that if i don't do any research and buy ANYTHING on a whim then i've only got myself to blame if what i purchased ends up sucking.
