What do you guys think about this?

I'm thinking its would be really, really difficult for a person to be a hardcore ps3 player and, at the same time, be a hardcore psp player because the main gaming 'values' a hard core ps3 player has goes against what the psp actually is. Specifically, hardcore ps3 players seem to value large HD tv's (I emphasis the word large) and the sheer horsepower of the ps3 (relative to the other consoles).

Meanwhile, the psp is pretty much opposite that. Small screen and modest horsepower (granted relative to portables its the tech king but relative to next-gen consoles, even the wii, the psp is a wimp).

So what I'm untimately getting at is as the ps3 gets more and more popular and as more and more people get drawn into HD gaming, do you think the allure of the psp will suffer? Barring a price drop, i think it will and has (but a psp price drop would help combat the effects).

BTW, I'm only playing a psp right now b/c i'm studying overseas. Once i get back to the states, i'm probably going to sell my psp and psp games and buy myself a quality 26" hdtv (not large but i plan on watching it 2-3' away so it will appear large) and a ps3. It'll be goodbye psp, hello ps3. Goodbye portable gaming, hello HD gaming.

Edit: keywords 'hardcore'. i'm not saying that as the ps3 gets more and more popular people are going to stop buying psp's. what i am saying is that as the ps3 and HD gaming gets more popular, gamers are going to have less and less respect for the psp (and portable gaming in general) until they eventually view it as just a cheap commodity.

honestly man, i think your crazy. no one who enjoys playing a ps3 will hate playing a psp just because the psp plays on a smaller screen than a tv with lesser capabilities. bro its a portable. the ps3's a console.

i think that having a ps3 will encourage one to buy a psp, and vice versa, because the two coordinate so well. i have a psp, and cant wait to get a ps3 so i can use the two together.

frankly, the two are completely different, meant to be completely different, and therefore i enjoy each for their purpose.

Home console, portable console, pc's games....its all just videogames. the whole purpose of these videogames is just to satisfy gamer's videogame 'fix';

let me ask you something,
-do u game in high defintion?
-if so, what size is ur HD tv?
-do u plan on getting a bigger HD tv?
-do u plan on upgrading to 1080p?

b/c all this will affect ur PERCEPTION of portable gaming (it will cheapen ur perception).

that's why i called it a PHILOSOPHICAL question....b/c i'm wondering how HD gaming will affect people's PERCEPTION  of the psp. keywords, PHILOSOPHICAL and PERCEPTION.

None of those things have affected my perception of psp in a negative way.  I actually appreciate my psp even more, since it can utilize some unique features of ps3 .  I'm not sure how can try and compare these two vastly different gaming machines.

I"m just saying, once people get into HD gaming its a very slippery slope and portable consoles tend to get pushed aside. By slippery slope I mean, gamers usually start out doing high definition gaming with a 20-32" hdtv that's 720p (b/c that's all their budgets can afford) but then in the back of their mind MOST EVENTUALLY want to upgrade to a bigger screen and/or 1080p. And before you know it, they've dropped $1,500 to 2000 for HD gaming. And the psp is left in the corner collecting dust.

Maybe its not so apparent now because the ps3 doesn't have that many really good games but once the good titles and Playstation Home come out then I think the ps3 is totally going to overshadown the psp. of course there are steps sony can take to stimulate demand and counter this (like price drop and/or redesign) but i think the general trend is that as the ps3 gets more and more popular and as people send more and more hundrends of dollars on HD gaming (key idea here: HD gaming is expensive), the psp will get more and more overshadowed.

BTW, i'm not doing a direct comparsion of the ps3 and psp, I'm just looking at the relationship between the two. in the end, my point is that the psp and ps3 are not entirely complementary. in some ways, the increasing popularity of the ps3 works against the psp.

I think portable gaming will always be second best to console gaming, at least for most people.  It's understandable since you usually get a richer gaming experince on consoles.  I personally play my psp significantley more than my ps2, but I know alot of people who have both systems do the opposite.

Having a PS3 doesn't make having a psp worthless. HD gaming is here ..... has been for some time! The experience of portable gaming and console gaming is different but that doesn't mean gamers can't enjoy both (if it did some other console maker best pack it up), as long as there are games worth playing both will be enjoyed!

The allure of the psp is the PORTABLE portion of it. Only if the ps3 was portable would you have proper reason to worry about the psp.

Uh..first off let me tell you by saying that the PS3 is not worth the money. You could buy an Xbox360, hardrive, extra controller, and 2 games plus xbox live for the price of a $600 PS3. PS3 even only has one good game out right now and that is Resistance. But Resistance is not even that good of a game compared to Gears of war which has a sequel. I would advise buying a PS3 later on when it is around $400 because you're only going to get a lousy system that has no games with potential coming around until mid-2008 while PSP and xbox360 have TONS of good games coming out later this year. And you cannot compare a console with a handheld. Comparing a PS3 to a PSP is like comparing Donald Trump's wages to that of an average school teacher. So in conclusion you cannot compare PSP to PS3. PSP is excelling right now selling and making many great games while the PS3 doesnt have much games coming out. 360 is by far the better system than PS3 and PSP is the best handheld i have ever had in my opinion!

i agree the ps3 isn't the best YET. but its the new kid on the block (i'm not even going to talk about the wii) but once a steady stream of good games start coming out this fall together with ps Home, then its all going to come together for the ps3. fortunately i don't plan on getting one until early 2008 (when i return to the states) so the ps3 should be real good then.

BTW, i just can't get over the hardware problems of the 'other console'. that's a total dealbreaker for me.

I still dont see why HDTV would affect the ability to play psp. Now, I would understand if your a hardcore ps3 or x360 player, but I'll tell you that I sold my xbox360. Not only because I have a SDTV, but because I couldn't afford the $60 price tag on the games. I could bigger and better things in life with that money. I would say the biggest perception  that has affected the psp is the pricetag on its games. This is why psp and pc are my only consoles and its going to stay that way for a while. Now, this isIMO.

That's is true about the PSP, it provides a lot of bang for the gamer buck. a gamer can get 3 good psp games ($20 each) for the price of one next-gen game; next gen consoles can't touch the psp as far as pricing goes.

I have both a PSP and a PS3.. I think they go hand in hand quite well.. I cant be on the toilet and playing my Ps3.. so I use my PSP.. but when I want next-gen graphics, I play the ps3.. It's all about what you want when you want.. going on a trip? it's far easier to take your psp then to lug around a ps3..

Well, the PSP is more or less supposed to be a compliment to the PS3, allowing additional functions with PS3 games and allowing content from the PS3 to be accessed anywhere. I think if Sony's strategy works in the future, buying a PSP to go with your PS3 should come naturally so in effect, you're never really away from the system. I don't think that the PS3 will eclipse the PSP because of the difference in the consoles, but I think you may see the PSP become more of an accessory to the PS3 which by no means makes the PSP any less than it is.
