I would strongly encourage playing the full MGS series before starting on MGS4, a lot of people suggest new ps3 owners to get MGS4 and play it without playing the previous ones, some suggested reading the story online and stuff... but I think it would be better to play through the whole series instead of reading the story online because there is so much more into those stories, all 3 of them give you just as good a story as MGS4 and if you start on MGS4 you'll miss out on the first three because it spoils everything that happend... also I feel like MGS1 and MGS2 are more stealth based on MGS4... what do you guys think?

yeah play all 3 first ! or if youre really lazy to do that, watch the full story from MGS1 - MGS3 @ youtube instead of reading the summary from the database!!!
I've actually only completed 1 and 2, and watched 3, with the Existence disc which you get with MGS3: Subsistence. But yeah, I recommend people play the first three before the fourth.
In all honesty, reading the database and just being what's told in MGS4 isn't enough. A person really needs to play the previous three in order to really get into it all. Imo.
yeah thats what I thought because there is a lot more to the story than what database had, you'll miss out on 3 great stories, and once you play mgs4 it is hard to go back to see those stories because you know what is going to happen...
I played the first three before starting 4 but I don't think it's absolutely nessesary. The games does a pretty good job of explaining most of the important things.
yea, i played through them all before 4. been a fan for a while. i recommend playing through them all, not like it'll kill you. My brother only played 4 and was running to my room for backstory from me the entire game...little brothers
yeah true, my friend went through mgs3 in 6 hours so he can play mgs4 without spoiling 3... just play on easiest difficulty if you want to get through it fast..
Definitley need to play MGS1, next in the priority list is MGS3, MGS2 least relevant to the story.moshakirby18

Um... not so much. You learn about the patriots in MGS2... and Raiden... and Olga... and Liquid Ocelot... and Vamp... I think MGS2 is the MOST important one to play.
Definitely play all 3 mgs before the 4th one. It's best IMO to play MGS3 then MGS1 and finally MGS2 before MGS4. Played all of them, beat all of them and loved all of them =]

but it is so hard to play MGS1 when you played mgs 3 since ps2 versions are a lot better

I would highly recommend anyone to first play the first three MGS games. It is possible to play MGS 4 without playing the previous three and fulle understand what is going on, but to really appreciate certain elements of MGS 4 and especially certain parts of the game (act 4 for instance) you really need to play the whole collection before playing MGS 4. It's just the same as when you only watch the last 30 minutes of an epic movie, you'll know what happened and why, but it won't be as satisfying as watching the whole movie.
wow i definitely think that anyone should play the first 3 before playing the 4th. you don't really need to play metal gear 1 or 2 though.
let me back my first statement up, first off I'd like to say that i believe metal gear solid 4 to be this console generations final fantasy 7 for ps1 or (insert game you think was phenomenal that made owning the system worth it all on its own) for ps2, in terms of storytelling and graphics, i mean playing that game is like watching a freaking movie... and this isn't some movie you fall asleep at... this is one of the best movies ever... if i hadn't played the first 3 games in the series i wouldn't have the same feeling that i got when the game was over. think of it in terms of one very long game rather than 4 separate experiences... because that's what it really is, the story is so cohesive and well thought out that you owe it to yourself to play through it all and experience it, not skim through it...
it really something like star wars, at least the first 3... before i ever saw any of the star wars films i had heard the term "Luke i am your father"... as I'm sure any late teens early 20-something has... and i have always regretted it... think about how awesome it would have been to not have that spoiled for you! this is the same kind of feeling you will get with MGS4 if you play all of the games that came before it... if not you will have a very good game nonetheless but nothing near as good as if you had played the first 3.
