You can play PS2 games on a PS3 using a PS3 controller. And you can play games using a PS2 controller on a PS3 if you buy that extension thingy..
But anyhoot, I think you hafta press the PS button when the PS2 game is running and assign your controller..not sure..but Robotech (PS2 game) said I needed a Dualshock controller to play it on my PS3. I played with the PS settings and got it to work.
Yeah you need to press the PS button to play PS2 games on your PS3 using the PS3 controller. If you turn on the system with the PS button, the controller will automatically turn itself off if a PS2 game is inside, so you need to press the button once more. That happens with any PS2 game.
I haven't come across a game telling me to insert a Dualshock controller in port 1, however. I'm sure you neet to do something in the settings when you press the PS button to bring up the sub-menu. Should work after tinkering a bit.
you cannot use your ps3 controller for the ps2, or the ps2 controller for the ps3....ps3 is usb, and sixaxis...ps2 is, uh, wide plug-in crap, and dualshock 2...they are completely different thingsdEtHsLaYeR
LIAR!!! you can use a ps2 controller with a ps3, they have a converter HA
Are you not listening to what everyone's saying. You have to press the PS button on your SIXAXIS when you play PS2/PS1 games on your PS3, and then it won't give you the message saying to insert the controller. It's not that hard to notice the obvious instruction on the screen. It'll say as soon as you put in the disc and when it shows the PS2 logo, it'll say, "Press PS Button". Whoever said that you can't use a PS2 controller with the PS3 is a liar and you don't know what you're talking about. The PS3 has 2 adapters that use the PS2 devices. First it has a memory card adapter that plugs into the USB cable that you get with the PS3 to charge it and then you plug it into the USB in the PS3. Then they have the same thing but it's an adapter for the controller which plugs into the USB cable as well and then into the PS3. Yes you can play the PS2 games with the SIXAXIS on the PS3 wirelessly, I have a 60 gig PS3(my main PS3), an 80 gig PS3, and a 40 gig PS3. There's no way it won't work unless you broke something so that it won't work wirelessly witht he PS2 games. That is all and don't forget, the adapter for the memory card and controller work with PS1 gear as well.

well there is a chance that the controller died while the game started but make sure the 1st red light on the controller is lit if press the ps button on the sixaxis and if that doesnt work then plug in the controller via usb.....and if that doesnt work the press the ps button while its plugged in and go to controller options and change it to slot 1
