So, if I were to play a PS1 or PS2 game on a PS3 would the data save onto a hard drive or would I need an old PS2/PS1 Memory card? Thanks. I would also like to know that if I were to play a PS1 game could I save the data onto a PS2 memory card or not? I remember that on my old PS2 PS1 data wouldn't save on the cards. So yeah, thanks in advance.

The PS3 gives you the ability to create 'virtual' PS1/2 memory cards; this allows it to recognize a card in the game, but it's still saving to the hard drive. PS1 games still require a PS1 memory card to save, but in the case of the PS3 you just have to create a virtual PS1 memory card, and the same with PS2 games.

The only time you need an old PS1/PS2 card is if you 1) have old saves you want to carry over onto the PS3 (which you'd also need a memory card reader to make the transfer), or 2) want to take your saves onto a card to take to somewhere and play on an old PS1/2 (need the memory card reader for this too).

The PS3 can create "Virtual" PS1 and PS2 memory cards on the harddrive. You'll have no need for the old memory cards.

Great, that's good to hear. I finally found my old copy of FF7 and wanted to know if in order to save it on the PS3 I'll get in a few months If I'd need a Memory card, Thankfully not the case. Thanks a lot!

MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS, LittleTauran!

In order to save PS1/PS2 files on a PS3, you need a 60GB or 80GB PS3. Or else, with the 40/20GB PS3, you cannot play PS1/PS2 games and regular DVDs (I think) and I know for sure you can't save PS1/PS2 files on a 40/20GB PS3. I hope you read this! :)

Yes, read it and duly ignore that bit of misinformation. The 40 GB will let you make virtual PSOne cards with no problems and the 20 GB does let you make virtual cards for both the PSOne and PS2.

Well, I am sorry for what I had said. When I bought my PS3, I was told I can't do that stuff on a 40g PS3... What I said was taken from the sales clerk and you don't have to get too mad at me; I am still a PS3 noob.
