That's only for the early PS3's that had backwards compatibility. Slims and some fats can't play PS2 games.

Only the original 60GB PS3s can play PS2 games. I wish I still had mine but it broke and I had to get an 80GB :(

I've gt a 250gb slim, since my 60gb died on me, and it has a menu where you can make an internal ps2 memory card. What the hell is that for? Anyhow it wont play ps2 games.

What you downloaded isn't for adding PS2 compatibility to PS3s. What it does is allow (for PS2 capable PS3s) the few PS2 games that used the add-on PS2 hard drive (like Final Fantasy XI) to properly recognize the hard drive in the PS3.

Considering there are still PS3s out there that support playing PS2 games, it's no use creating separate firmware just to remove creating internal memory cards. It'd be a logistical nightmare down the road having to detect and provide separate firmware with each revision.

Not quite. The 60 GB and 20 GB models are 100% compatible. There are 2 80 GB models of the PS3. The one with two USB ports is not compatible with any PS2 games. However, the one with four USB ports is compatible with some 85% of PS2 games. None of the rest of the models are compatible.

just buy a ps2 to play your ps2 games. its cheap enough. Plus PS3 games are way better now. PS2 is old hat. You can download Final Fantasy VII also now to play on the ps3 if old skool games is your thing
