I've got a question. I just bought a 60 GB PS3 off of E-bay. Finally got it today. It didn't seem to work. It turned on but nothing would come up on the screen. I was going to raise hell about to the person I bought it from, but then I saw that it was only HDMI compatable. Stupid me. So I guess that means I'm totally screwed, right?

But then I did a whole bunch of searching on the internet and loads of people said that it worked fine on non-HD tv's (which is what I have). So even though the seller said that, is there anyway that I can make it work? (I tried holding down the power button for five seconds. Didn't do anything.) So that got me thinking maybe there's a hope in hell that someone out there knows something.

Also, does a 60 GB only play on an HDTV? Because that could be the problem. But it came with RCA cables....

Am I just a total dumbass?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't think I got any composite cables, but if I get some are you sure that'll work?

Thanks for the reply.

No, I have a 60 gig and an HDTV. It should work fine on a regular TV....because it comes with SD Av cables. Double check your cables, make sure everythings in the right spot and plugged in tight. What brand/kind of TV do you have?

What cables did it come with? red, white, yellow?

1) What cables are you using - composite, component or HDMI?
2) Is it just the display isn't working - or is the PS3 not-booting up. ( try doing somthing - eg. hooking PS3 up to speakers to hear sound , or trying to enter a game )

3) make sure all the cable are connected proberly.
4) Does the light on PS3 say green or change to red ( or possibly yellow?)

I have an old school Mitsubishi. Got it in like 96. It's worked with my PS1 and PS2 like a dream. Don't know why it's not now. Everything's plugged in the right place.

I'm using normal RCA cables (old school red, white, yellow). I tried to put in Warhawk and it lit up blue/green but nothing came up. When I hit the power switch it stays red and doesn't do anything. Only when I put a game in does it come up blue/green (on the console). Nothing on screen. Plus who ever shipped it sucked, the bottom of it is coming off. That could have something to do with it.

Probably a good idea. I just wanted a 60 gig so I could play all of my old games otherwise I would have bought a 40 gig. I'm not totally sure what "composite cables" are. Will they go into the PS3? The seller said either HDMI or composite. So I guess that could work?

Where could I get some of these? And don't say E-bay.

Are the AV cables in good shape (the ones with the RCA plugs) or if your not sure you can use a set of cables from a PS2 because the connections are the same, I use the PS2 component cables on the PS3 with no problem. If you can use the composite cables to connect everything to your TV then you should be able to have the TV on and from standby on the PS3 hold the power button on the PS3 until you hear the second beep then it should display an option to select the current connection in which you should select yes, you may need to have your controller connected with the cable that came with the system until you have everything up and running.

Yeah I plugged in the controller. The RCA plugs seem to be in good condition. But my system won't really come on (get all blue/green as opposed to standby in red) unless you put a game in there. Still, nothing comes up. I'll try my PS2 cable.

All of you guys are wrong. I work at GameStop and I get this all the time (usually with alot of yelling and cursing). It's probably set in HDMI mode, HD, or SD. The only way to find out is plug in an HDMI cable in and see if it comes up, if it doesn't, try the next one. One of them will pop up. It's a pain, but its the only way. Also, it could be set in one of the HD mode such as 1080i, or 720p, or 1080p in which you would need a tv that could use that.

Yeah, I'm going to head over to my buddy's house tomorrow who has an HD to see what the deal is. So maybe I could change it in the settings if I get it to come up, or maybe I'm just screwed as I said. Goddamn it. Oh well. I appreciate everyone's help. Thanks.

That'd piss me of fit was just set in an HD mode and I couldn't change it.

I had this problem with my PS3, also purchased on ebay:)

Hook everything up via composite like you normally would. When you turn the system on, hold the power button for 5 seconds. It will reset the screen mode and automatically adjust to the composite cables. I had mine hooked up through hdmi, but the screen mode wasn't correct. It booted up but showed nothing on the screen. But try holding the power button and it should work.

I tried that. The one on the front, right? It doesn't do anything unfortunately. I think it's because when it was shipped, the bottom right hand of the consol got a little messed up.

Use the composite cables.IllegalGamer
And hold down the power button for 5 seconds it will reset it so it displays in 480i, then you can set the settings how ever you want.

Hey man,

I think what the problem you are having is that the PS3 is set up for video output using HDMI. The only way that I know you can get it switched over to composite, svideo, or component is to actually go in the video output settings and change it back to composite for example in your case. The problem you have is you have no way of navigating to that video output since you don't have a tv with HDMI connections. In other words the system may be working, but you have to get the output signal changed (i.e. the PS3 doesn't automatically detect a video output signal after it has been initially set up). I know that the system will confirm if you want to keep the settings. I've had this problem, b/c when i want to go online wirelessly, i actually have to move my ps3 upstairs for my internet connection, but only have an svideo connection there. My tv downstairs is connected via hdmi. So whenever I move the system from one tv to another, i have to remember to change the video settings.

Your best bet aside from buying and HDTV and HDMI cable is to bum a ride from a buddy who has an hdmi cable and HDTV. Get the settings changed to what you need, but also be sure you have the connetions handy for the tv you have. Change the settings to what you need. Then change the tv input, save settings, and you should be good to go. Hope this helps.

if anything the seller, had the ps3 set to HD over hdmi or component cables, and 4got to reset it back to HD. the component cables are the red green blue and the composite are red yellow and white. U might have to test, composite, component, and hdmi and see which one the display shows up on. I remember using my ps3 on my HDtv and having it on HD. Then switching to a SDtv and no display came up. The ps3 doesnt automatically correct itself for some reason...

if the seller had it set for component then composite would still work. the ps3 automatically reads the lowest resolution that the tv can operate on, so it would revert to 480i. meaning he'd at least have one color or a messed up looking screen if it was previously set on component. so it was deffinatly set to HDMI. you said you've tried holding the power button for 5-10 seconds???was the console off or on when you tried this? i believe you have to switch the console off then hold the button. also just be sure you have the composite cables hooked up properly. many is the time my buddies needed help with vcr or dvd issues but they had the yellow(video)cable in the wrong input. also try a different input on the tv

this is the solution, if it still doesnt work, then your system is not working properly

Yeah guys the thing won't even turn on now. It just sits in standby mode. Piece of crap. I'm going to get my damn money back and get a new, unused 60 GB. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've tried just about everything imaginable. Different tv channels/inputs, holding the power button down for 5-10 seconds (doesn't do anything), I think this unit is compromised. In other words, it's ****

But serioulsy, appreciate the help guys. Thanks.

Last time I go on E-bay for anything used. Jesus.
