Is the Playstation 3 fully backwards compatible with PS2 games?

The 20gb and 60gb are, yes (they have an emotion engine chip).

The 80 gb is, mostly (it doesn't have the chip and just uses the software to emulate).

Sweet, couple more questions though. Do I need to have a PS2 memory card or PS2 controller to play the PS2 games on the Playstation 3?

And does the Playstation 3 come with HDMI cables? Thanks for the response!

You don't need the PS2 memory card unless you want to transfer your old game saves to the PS3. Then you'll need a memory card adapter.

It doesnt come with HDMI cables. Maybe you should check the Playstation website. http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About
