Today figured I would play one of my games online but when signing up for the network it asked for a credit card, I thought it was free for the PS3 unlock the XBOX, do they charge you and if so how much? If not why do they want my credit card?

You dont need to pay for online play. The only time I remember being asked about a credit card was when I was setting up my account and it asked about the billing stuff.

they want your credit card for a few reasons, first off being that you're not signing up for multiple copy accounts for whatever reason they can think of. another is so that you can buy stuff from the PS Store right after you sign up. otherwise its just probly to prove your identity incase something happens.

btw you meant "unlike the xbox" i'm trying to ignore it but its really bugging me, so thats all i'm gonna say about it.
