If your tv already has a resolution of 720p, do u need a hdmi cord for the playstation 3 in order to play in 720p? Can ps3 play in 720p without the hdmi cord? Thanks.:D

You can use a component cable instead... although, its much bettwe quality through hdmi and if you look hard enough, its cheaper too...

Using component the PS3 can do 720p _EXCEPT_ on some TVs it just doesn't work as expected.  On my Samsung HDTV 720p I get an out of range error.  This also happens to another friend on a Samsung.  Kind of sucks because my 360 worked fine on that TV.  I have a 2nd HDTV a Sony Bravia and all resolutions worked fine over component.

You guys made sure other resolutions like 1080i and 1080p were not turned on. The PS3 area will use the highest resolution possible, so if it thinks it can do 1080p, that might cause an out of range error. Though, 1080i should work fine on most anything.

Simply, the free cord you get with the PS3 is Composite, the yellow video cable. That can only do standard definition, and people have stopped using that connection since DVDs came out, it's always been S-video at the minimum for DVDs unless you wanted to throw away the better quality of dvds.

The only cables that will do HD are Component, VGA, DVI, and HDMI.

Of course... I don't know what the exact issue is but it's happening to me and a friend.  Personally I don't care as the Samsung here is just some cr@ppy bedroom TV the Sony is the main 1.  My friend on the other hand hates it.  All of his 720p games are being downscaled to SD.
