Hi guys. I don't have a PS3 yet, but I was thinking on getting one.

I was just wondering, what does the future of PS3 look like? A long time ago, when i reserached the console war stuff, one of the main PS3 "pros" was that the media is blu ray, so it has more potential for developers to actually put more stuff onto the disc, etc.... But has anyone actually utilized this power? Does the PS3 actually HAVE mroe potential or is that just a load of mumbo jumbo?

What is on the horizon? Anything interesting? Should I be excited to get my PS3 on black friday? Or maybe not so much...

It hasn't been maxed out but already has some games with some great graphics (Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, upcoming: Heavy Rain, God of War III). Also there are many great exclusives coming to the PS3 in 2010 (Agency, Agent, FF XIII Versus, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Last Guardian, MAG, Modnation Racers, White Knight Chronicles, etc.).

If you're asking such questions. Then maybe you shouldn't be buying a PS3.

Or, he just wants a little more info on the system before shelling out $300.

I only have a problem with your last sentence...

Why would anybody not be excited about getting a PS3???

The only direction PS3 is going in is up.

Expecting us to be fortune tellers for a piece of plastic?

This is what marketers are for and what they're paid to do. This is why info about this console is all over the net. Either you want it, or you don't. If he's so concerned about "shelling $300", wouldn't that be something for himself to decide? Isn't that where "research" comes in?

I can't be in a minority here. If I'm deciding to put down $300 for an item. Chances are, I'm going to research the thing I'm about to buy. Not ask people on a message board (on a gaming website) silly questions expecting people to decide for me. If he's worried about "the future", then he shouldn't buy a console or PC at all.

The only reason Sony included Blu Ray was to win the format war

If you are interested in what the PS3 has to other, then by all means go for it

I remember hearing way back before the 360 came out that Blu Ray was being integrated into the PS3... back then it was unknown territory and I was too young to know what to think of it, I just knew that the PS3 would have advanced technology.

Man, I need to find that article... but I'm pretty sure Sony had Blu Ray+PS3 in mind before there was a format war, because that's what Ken Kutaragi does... he changes up the format with each system. CD ROM -> DVD -> Blu Ray.

Or maybe it wasn't that long ago... I'm not sure.

I've been following anything Blu-Ray/PS3 that was released. I even remember Blu Ray disk prototype pictures. Some were in cases and the read media itself was paper thin. Many of the articles about the advancements in this technology were so interesting to read. I even remember reading the first mentioning that PS3 was going to use Blu Ray and "not DVD after all". Even back then, I knew I was probably going to buy it.

Was the idea of PS3 using BR around before the Xbox, or is LastGuy right, and Sony only put BR in the PS3 to combat HD DVD?

If I remember correctly, it was made public before 360 was launched. Though, you cannot rule out that either company had any knowledge of the other console before hand. But the impression I got, Blu Ray was meant for (to be) a superior medium data. Not to "one up on XBox".

But being mean is not my intension. It's within everyone's ability to use their brains. Especially for something so simple. I can see asking a legit question. But a dose of reality is called for with something like this. Encouraging people to think for themselves is never a bad thing.

Oh ok... so either of us could be right. I'm sure Sony did anticipate such a calamity of a war, as LastGuy states.

So many lives lost... countless innocents slaughtered...

The format war didn't have much to do with the Xbox at all

Sony must've known that HD DVD players would be cheaper at retail, and they had this massive brand name that could serve as Bluray's flag ship

Without the PS3, I am certain blu ray would have been defeated

Hmm... Let me clarify some things.

I I have already decided to buy a PS3, as I indicated in my first post. Shelling out $300 is already decided.I am not asking anyone whether or not I should buy the PS3 or not. Since I already know what I am getting next week, I wanted to get to know what else I have to look forward to for the next couple of years.

2) I am extremely excited to get the PS3. But my question is should I be excited about the future. The future does not necessarily entail a product that is better than it is today. It could very well be that the PS3 has reached a plateau; not in the capability of the PS3, but in the willingness and capability of developers to actually make use of the great technology i've been hearing about. And so I thought a gaming forum would be a great spot to ask knowledgable members of the PS3 community about the future of a product that they have all invested in.

Yet, nobody has really answered my questions yet... =(

3) Please exlain to me, Denji, why asking questions about the future of PS3 = I should not buy the product; especially when my question is not "should i buy PS3". Does not make sense at all. Seems like the regular forum eliteism by someone who thinks they are too good to lend a helping hand to someone; YET you still feel the need to spend a second to pass judgement on me (that i should not buy a PS3).

Thank you stealthmonkey , for helping, and others that were trying to help.

Ah, but you have not explained in such detail with your first post. Considering this happens around here "a lot", it is a justifiable response.

There is no "forum elitism" with the likes of me. I do not imagine I have any kind of "power" through text on a gaming message board.

But to believe I have "passed judgement on you" is of your free will to believe. But due to the context of your original post, I have "lent a helping hand". The fact you had to "clarify" your original post doesn't put me in "the wrong".

Well to directly answer your question:

The PS3 has not plateaued quite yet, the brand's biggest franchise has not had a full release on the PS3 (among others)

Plus there are other high quality first parties game like God of War 3, The Last Guardian and third party games like FF13

The PS3 still has 3 years left as the flagship of the PlayStation brand

I'm not trying to put anyone down or say anyone is "in the wrong." But my clarification of buying a PS3 should have nothing to do with your statement. Your statement specifically says "If I am asking such questions [about the future of PS3 (since that is what my question was)] then I should not buy a PS3" This statement does not make sense to me. This is what we call on the forums a "troll" attempt. You put a sentence down, which, regardless of if it was your intent or not, should be clear that it will provoke an emotional response from me (since you NOT ONLY did not help to answer any of my questions, but you also don't even justify your reasoning for such an action). Overall you are most certainly in the wrong. And still yet you do not care even an inch about answering my true question about the PS3's future. You only cared enough to respond to my post in defense of yourself.

Assume what you must. But I have answered your question. I'm sorry it doesn't "make sense to you". But my intensions are not to "troll" or provoke "an emotional response". It's just a message board.

Or maybe not so much...

threx808

The future of the ps3 is bright. There are a number of announced games that are sure to be a big hit. Plus the great games out already. As far as game line up its at the least equal to the other system "it who must not be named :P". Its proven to be a reliable system. And yes when devlopers choose to take full advantage of the system it has a number of advantages or "potential" over the other consoles. IMHO while a number of 3rd party multi plats look a little crisper on the other system the very best looking console games are on the ps3. MGS4,Uncharted2,kZ2. plus blue ray movies are great. while nothing is set in stone iv been a gamer for some 20+ years and from my exp and from what i hear/read the ps3 will be sonys flag ship system for at least another 3 years. So yes you should should be exited. on a side note. while i highly recommend doing your own research, there is nothing wrong with asking opinions on a forum intended for the very thing your asking about ;).

I clicked on thisthread because I too am planning on buying a PS3 on black friday and was interested in what people had to say. Its guys like you denji that lead me away from these forums. All the thread starter did was ask a simple question and you took it upon yourself to post on this thread and garner as much attention as possible. We get it man, you're cool.
