I replied to a couple of topics on PS4, and decided to make my own topic about it. Feel free to express your own ideas, assuming PS4 will be released.

When will PS3 be superceeded by PS4?

I think this (7th) generation might be the longest yet, because development costs were all higher, and PS3 has had a slow start, and Sony plan for it to be a 10 year lifespan of a console.

I know (from wiki) PlayStation came out Japan in Dec 1994, North America and Europe in Sep 1995, it cost $299 on launch day, ceased production in 2006.

PS2 was announced in 1999, and launched in 2000 in Japan, but there were manufacturing problems. PS2 is still on sale today, and probably will stay in production longer than PS (2012 ? ).

PS3 was launched Nov 2006 in Japan and North America, and March 2007 in Europe, plus there were manufacturing difficulties. As it stands, PS3's sales growth rate is higher than PS2's for the same period of time (take from that whatever you want). I expect PS3 to stay alive for as long or longer than PS2, (probably be in production till at least 2018 ) because the money invested in it is a much larger amount.

PS4 will (if Sony keeps doing these kinds of increments in technology) cost even more to make, and will probably have holographic disc format, and real-time raytracing graphics hardware. If history serves as a good indicator, PS4 will be expected to come out about 5-6 years into the PS3's life, but because of the much bigger leap in technology, I think it will be more like 8-9 years. I don't think they will be 'doing a microsoft' and releasing a new console 3 years later, no way. I think developers still have a lot to learn about the Cell Broadband Engine, and all the tricks it can do before they start working on something completely different. Who knows, by then molecular computing or optical computing might be coming to the mainstream and there could be a revolutionary change in technology that makes the PS4 take even longer to come out.

Will it support 1080p or 1260p/1440p?

I think we'll have 1080p for a very long time, just like we had standard def tv's for a long time. Everything is still converting to 1080 such as broadcast tv, and I don't think there will be another upgrade for a while, until everything is 720 or 1080 and standard definition tv's are no longer available, but that's just my opinion.

What other technology will it have?

I think there will definitely be a different storage medium used in the PS4, probably holographic discs, as these will be able to store 1.6 terrabytes. I also wonder whether all or most games will use raytracing in real-time in the 8th console generation (that's what we're heading for it seems), that would make games insanely expensive to make but the graphics would largely look like those in pre-rendered CGI films. Hopefully it will be fully backward compatible with PS3 games! and have PSP connectivity! maybe they'll even bring back PS2 compatibility and upscaling, maybe even a UMD slot for playing PSP games on the machine or maybe the PSP2 will be out then...

On the other hand, it has been expected for a while now that silicon chip technology would become obsolete, and replaced by optical processors or molecular processors, and deveopment in these areas is slowly happening. Eventually this will lead to artificial nervous systems (brains in your playstaion and pc) and the holy grail - quantum computers. If these technologiies are to be implemnted into the PS4, it would not be out for a very long time.

I'll maybe add more later

i disagree with u... im not sure about sony... but companies have a design cycle... and normally when one product is out they would have already had a team getting ready for the next one...

so if im correct the ps4 is already in production... its just probably just in the brainstorming stage... but im pretty sure sony has given it a thought... its like this because in order to stay ahead of competition... you need to have as much as a head start as possible... so thts y i thing ps4 is in design stages of production...

Its anyone's guess? It will be sometime before any new console is made. Just enjoy and hope that great games come and can begin to use the power of the current PS3.

i am sure they are brainstorming now but nothing is probably set in stone, and yes if this gen keeps going the way it is they will probably switch over to a wii-type remote and hopefully will add something that will track your head so things appear more like true 3d, and even though i dont think most people will adopt these television sizes the playstation 4 will probably support 2k and 4k resolutions, other than that better graphics, surround sound blah blah blah

In sept 23, 2016 Playstation 4 will finally hit stores. People will be robbed/shot for PS4 on launch day. The cost will be 699.00 with no Pack in game, and One controller. The launch titles bomb and everyone complains it's the end of Sony. Internet boards are full of people remembering the good old days days of Playstation 3. As PS3 slimline has long sinced crossed the 100 Million mark. At this point Mircosoft is on Xbox 5 which launches the same day. So it other words Playstation 4 will be great... It will just take awhile for people to enjoy Playstation 4.

I agree totally this game console wont be made in the very last 2 yrs. Sony will already be thinking on PS4 and probably getting ideas on how to make the PS3 better and get their technology even higher so it beats rivals like xbox. They maybe starting to create soon but i dont think it will be released any time soon.

A beast of a machine built by highly advanced aliens conspiring with sony to hypnotise the human race using near realistic graphics and gameplay that literally sucks u in to the TV. ( just a joke)

time to get serious: Maybe it will come out 4-8 years later. support graphics better than crysis. Quad cell processor. 2X Nvidia 8800GTX graphics card . support real time ray tracing. Redesigned controller. Just imagine..................

It will not be a standard console and controller anymore. It will consist of a swimming- hat like headpiece with two lenses circling round for the eyes, and a long tail off the back of the hat.

The tail would allign itself with the spine, and once in position, it would plunge dozens of little needles into the spinal cord, and deliver a paralytic agent to prevent the player from moving around while gaming. Electropads in the hat and small pulses of electricity into the spinal cord would give the player the illusion he actually is 'in' the game

All games would be in first-person, as you are seeing through your own eyes. There would be no need for memory card or hard drives, the hat would save games directly onto the players brain.

It will be called the Playstation Sense (PSS)

As you can all tell, I have been talking completely out of my arse

Well considering getting these machines out was like a 5 year process. You got the years and years of E3. All after its announced that its comming out.

Add in another 2 years of gathering games up. And then developing them, as its reaching release date.

And with the new ridiculous power hardware. Will need even better talent for games, that take longer than now to get out "around 4 years for anything worth playing." And we still haven't seen 60% PS3 powered games this gen. Its gonna be a long while. Micro even said that not to long ago. Plus media will have changed so their gonna work on alot of other stuff before another system.

Not to mention that all 3 need to come out again. Because a third party wont take a risk on one new system, that no one has bought yet.

Dude. In 2001 if you said to a game dev that we would be able to do a game like lets say....Resistance 2 in a 1-2 years time frame, he would call you nuts.

We can't forget that Consoles evolve but so do the developing techniques and tools. I'm not worried about that because 20 years ago we were playing PONG and it was something out of this world.

01 is 7 years ago. But fact is what Micro was saying "and others." Is they see other ways of getting to games and gamers outside of systems. Not that we wont have systems anymore. But the need for them, wont be a chance anyon Co. needs to take for many years. With so many way more profitable ways to game coming. No one is gonna waste the years they put into what they have now. And go back under, when they wont see a good profit from what they have now intill maybe 2010. And then you want to grow off of that. Its not like it used to be anymore.

Will be released somewhere around 2012. When MS rolls out a new box, Sony will have to respond. The PS3 just couldn't stand up to technology made in that time period.

I would like to see a PS4 but with Sony still in the red and causing some of us to lose patience with all the delays and devs have yet to supposedly unlock the PS3's full potential, it looks bad. Although PS3 is picking up steam MS is dropping a new system in 2010, currently code named xbox omega with spec's to exceed the PS3, can Sony afford to wait till PS4's rumored release date 2012? We see MS has became a worthy contender with a 1 yr head start just imagine what up hill battle would Sony have to fight after 2 yrs and it's very unlikely they can afford to drop a system any earlier, doing that would push their profit line back farther than Homer Simpson's hairline.

I'll maybe add more later

well sony will most likely learn from past mistakes, and hopefully give use a somewhat decent priced, easy to develop for, god like systemriver_rat3117
This is Sony we're talking about. It will basically make current PS3 development look like introductory programming to its rocket science. Sony has always had the hardest SDK's in the industry to code with/for. They will also invariably offer BC as a selling point, but only those could pay the $1k+ that the launch units will cost will actually get to enjoy it. Everyone else will be SOL once the new "flavor of the month" SKU comes out, making price gouging on eBay a big problem. It will also undoubtedly ape some of the aspects of the rivaling consoles (Wii, 360), though rather poorly, or in a very Sony-like way. BluRay will still be around, and it will again be the only player on the market that will survive Sony's revision fetishes. They will also purport "hey, we have linux support!" when all they'd really done was just not get in the way of those adventurous enough to try to get Linux working on the console in the first place. This is no doubt a way to basically give the middle finger to the EU whom tried to tax them extra on their consoles because they were a console, instead trying to argue the PS2 was a "computer entertainment system" when there was no widespread Linux support at all for the units.

Megavideogamer

I totally agree, this has pretty much happened for each playstation so far, so why not?
