I replied to a couple of topics on PS4, and decided to make my own topic about it. Feel free to express your own ideas, assuming PS4 will be released.
When will PS3 be superceeded by PS4?
I think this (7th) generation might be the longest yet, because development costs were all higher, and PS3 has had a slow start, and Sony plan for it to be a 10 year lifespan of a console.
I know (from wiki) PlayStation came out Japan in Dec 1994, North America and Europe in Sep 1995, it cost $299 on launch day, ceased production in 2006.
PS2 was announced in 1999, and launched in 2000 in Japan, but there were manufacturing problems. PS2 is still on sale today, and probably will stay in production longer than PS (2012 ? ).
PS3 was launched Nov 2006 in Japan and North America, and March 2007 in Europe, plus there were manufacturing difficulties. As it stands, PS3's sales growth rate is higher than PS2's for the same period of time (take from that whatever you want). I expect PS3 to stay alive for as long or longer than PS2, (probably be in production till at least 2018 ) because the money invested in it is a much larger amount.
PS4 will (if Sony keeps doing these kinds of increments in technology) cost even more to make, and will probably have holographic disc format, and real-time raytracing graphics hardware. If history serves as a good indicator, PS4 will be expected to come out about 5-6 years into the PS3's life, but because of the much bigger leap in technology, I think it will be more like 8-9 years. I don't think they will be 'doing a microsoft' and releasing a new console 3 years later, no way. I think developers still have a lot to learn about the Cell Broadband Engine, and all the tricks it can do before they start working on something completely different. Who knows, by then molecular computing or optical computing might be coming to the mainstream and there could be a revolutionary change in technology that makes the PS4 take even longer to come out.
Will it support 1080p or 1260p/1440p?
I think we'll have 1080p for a very long time, just like we had standard def tv's for a long time. Everything is still converting to 1080 such as broadcast tv, and I don't think there will be another upgrade for a while, until everything is 720 or 1080 and standard definition tv's are no longer available, but that's just my opinion.
What other technology will it have?
I think there will definitely be a different storage medium used in the PS4, probably holographic discs, as these will be able to store 1.6 terrabytes. I also wonder whether all or most games will use raytracing in real-time in the 8th console generation (that's what we're heading for it seems), that would make games insanely expensive to make but the graphics would largely look like those in pre-rendered CGI films. Hopefully it will be fully backward compatible with PS3 games! and have PSP connectivity! maybe they'll even bring back PS2 compatibility and upscaling, maybe even a UMD slot for playing PSP games on the machine or maybe the PSP2 will be out then...
On the other hand, it has been expected for a while now that silicon chip technology would become obsolete, and replaced by optical processors or molecular processors, and deveopment in these areas is slowly happening. Eventually this will lead to artificial nervous systems (brains in your playstaion and pc) and the holy grail - quantum computers. If these technologiies are to be implemnted into the PS4, it would not be out for a very long time.
I'll maybe add more later
