I have 2 PS3s in my house. Both are wirelessly using the internet for gaming and downloading from PSN. The only non-PS3 hardware is the small wireless broadband box, ( the phone line is plugged into it but it provides wireless capability for laptops and the PS3s )provided by the phone company. They are my internet provider. I am not very tech knowledgable. Is the small box perhaps a router? If not, do I need a router for something? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes that's a router. And if it works, then why switch it? Unless your internet speed is very slow....then I'd switch it. But other than that, I'd stick with it.

Yeah, that sounds like a modem/router combo, which I think some providers in the US use. Only reason for getting your own would be if that one starts giving you issues, disconnecting devices, etc.

I believe that box IS a router. Your PS3s are connected wirelessly through this thingamuhbob. For a more secure connection, you probably would want to connect your ps3's directly to the router with an ethernet cable, because wireless connectivity isn't totally stable, and you can get knocked offline at any given moment, but I personally do not have that problem, so I suppose it would depend on the type of router you are using. If you're connection to PSN or online gaming seems usable, then you should be fine.

Technically speaking, if it has multiple ethernet ports on the back of it... it's a router. If not, it's just a wireless access point (WAP). No, there's no need to get another router as long as your set up is working.
