I have an HDTV, and just bought a PS3. I put Spiderman 3 (blue-ray) in and it gives me those two stupid black lines on the top and bottom. I have tried every setting i can think of to get it off. Called Sony and they were no help. I thought that since it's a movie in HD and I have an HD tv, that I wouldn't have the letterbox crap! If anybody could tell me how to get that in full screen please help me. I bought a 52" tv to watch all 52" in HD. Please help.

I think what it is, is that the actual movie is Theater style which is even wider screened than 16:9 which stil requires some letter boxing even on HDtv's.

Don't quote me on that though.

You might be able to format the picture in your tv to get rid of the black bars. Does your tv have like a pic size button or maybe in the options of your tv.

GO TO YOUR TV REMOTE AND HIT ASPEC AND CHANGE IT TO THE FULL SCREEN. YOUR TV CHANGES THE SCREEN SETTING.

Blu-Ray discs keep the format which they where filmed in which letterboxs. Right now there are only a couple of movies which don't letter boc on Blu-Ray. At first I hated it, but you get used to it, especially when you realize how much more you can see!

yep.....that's the way it's supposed to look. If you had 4:3 tv then those black bars would be even bigger. It's just the aspect ratio.....the director's vision.

Read this......http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/764

I'm sure it will explain a lot for you.

Here's a little more in-depth discussion that explains what others on here have touched on.

Not if he always got the non-widescreen version of dvds. Me, I've always gotten the widescreen version when available, and don't mind a little black at the top and bottom to ensure i'm seeing the complete picture.

2.35:1 ratio most likely. Leave it, or you'll get skewed pictures or lose some of the picture. Usually only computer animated stuff is 16:9.

You cant view most blu ray movies in anything other than letterbox.I was pis**d at very same thing cos I too have decent Sony Bravia HD tv+I'd much rather have the film filling all the screen.

Blu-Ray is always in the original aspect ration the movie was shot it! if you want to change it then use your tv remote to fill the screen but you'll start to degrade the picture quality! and it Blu-Ray not Blue-Ray

That wont work either cos when your connected to HD tv via HDMI cable, you will just get on screen message something like format not supported when trying to zoom using your tv remote.

Different movies have different widescreen ratios. 1.85:1 will not have the letterbox while 2.35:1 will. Films filmed in 2.35:1 are made like that in order to present a wider angle image. Usually the more high-budget, blockbusters and epic films use it the most. My advice? If it bothers you, turn off the lights. You won't notice it as much.

It's not the PS3, it's the movie. The movie is making the letterbox effect. In my opinion, it looks better anyway. It makes it feel more theatrical with the letterbox than without it.

The letterboxes aren't even that big so you shouldn't really be complaining.
