Please help me with getting a new hardrive

Hey everyone, i just read the new article that gamespot did on the ps3 page and it has me sold (20 gig owner :cry: )

the only thing is I have never been a very technicle savy so I was hoping that you guys could reccomend a type of hardrive for me to buy. Am looking for a maybe 60-100 gigabyte hardrive, however if you have any information on good deals on other amounts of memory i would like to hear that as well. Also, tell me what kind of hardrive you know for CERTAIN works, such as the one you have right now.

Okay...the OP asked for something in the 80-100GB range, hence the 80GB HDD. Either way its a difference of $40 so if $40 more is worth twice the space then by all means I would go for the WD HDD.

I used that drive to replace my 20GB HDD and havent even come close to using half of the available space.

well i have done some research and to be honest you will want atleast a 100 gig hdd

i would suggest seagate or fitisju hdd's

in the 2 '5 inch format sata

but take note i have talked to people that said they got the faster hdd's

and it helped with game loading times so consider something like a 7200.2 hdd

they said it cut loading times in halve.

You know that the majority of the information in the game is read from the disk not from the HDD, and really a 7200RPM HDD would not add much more than heat to your PS3.

I highly doubt it cut load times by any fraction of a number. With that I say stick with a 5400 RPM HDD.

This is changing though - for example if you buy the download version of Warhawk - it will run 100% from your hard drive. In situations like that you will most likely see a BIG difference in access times if you are using a 7200rpm drive versus a 5400rpm drive. Any downloaded content will see the biggest speed increase. Also as far as heat goes - not so much. The newer 7200's are running at about the same heat and noise level as the 5400's - so the only reason not to go with the 7200's is added cost. But if it's worth the money to you then I say go for it.

By the way my choice is the 200gb 7200rpm IBM/Hitachi with a 16mb cache (double the norm) - as it's seek time is even faster than the 7200.2 Seagates which were previously the speed king in 2.5 drives. It'll cost you a little over $200 but is well worth it IMO as you won't need to worry about upgrading again. :)

this is a tough decsision. will 80 gigs last me till the end of this console's life? (I do delete game saves) DantesWell

If your not adding photos, music, or movies...Or if you clean out old trailers, demos and game saves you dont need then I would say 80GB would be more than enough.

Really if you dont mind cleaning it out (deleting stuff you dont need) every once in a while then I would say that 80GB would be more than enough space.

on the site, there is a combo offer also including an external attachment for the hardrives. Could you put your new hardrive in the external attachment, put your backup data on the new hardrive, and put the new hardive in the PS3 loading up all the back up data without any problems?

As far as external HDD go...You can dump all of your saved data onto the external drive. You cannot save and load games or any information on that external drive and access it in game. So basically you can move data between the PS3 and External drive but thats about it.

So I dont know if that answers your question but its an answer.

You could check Micro Center or Comp USA. You will probably pay a little more for it. But those are two stores that come to mind.

Just check Westerndigital.com and its $134 there? Thats $40 more than Newegg.
