Ok, so i didn't think it'd happen to me, but it did - I currently own an xbox 360, but after playing MGS4 at a friends yesterday, my jaw literally dropped at the awesomeness, and I'm pretty much thinking of getting a PS3 (I'll be keeping my 360). The reason why I haven't put this into the console wars thread is because, to be honest, I don't want arguments to start. I'd rather have PS3 owner's opinions and not "This console is better than this" because I already have one console, and am very happy with it.

Basically, I'm lost in the world of Playstation - I owned a PS2 for three months, before selling it due to need for cash. I've already figured there are benefits to picking a PS3 up - blu-ray functionality would be cool, I think Home looks awesome, MGS4 of course and the fact that I'll be able to play some of the PS2 games (God of War, Snake Eater) that I missed in the past. However, I am worried I'll buy it and suffer, due to a percieved lack of titles on the PS3, although is this wrong? It's not intended as a dig at Sony - I truly have little idea of what is available on the PS3.

I have several questions:

Firstly, while I'm struck on Metal Gear Solid, I don't know if it's worth waiting for more games to come out - I do intend to buy a PS3 at some point in the future, but what kind of big-name exclusives are available? I'm not really into racing games, and I've never really dabbled in JRPGs, so what is there available?

Also, I don't know which SKU to buy - in fact, I'm almost lost on how many SKUs there are available. I'm located in the UK if that helps with availability. Basically, I'm looking for PS2 backwards compatibility (I don't mind if it's emulation), hard drive space for those heavy-install games (I've already had trouble with the 20gb on the 360, so switched up to an elite) and built-in wireless is a must. Money isn't a BIG deal but the cheaper end of the spectrum would be better.

What about the major games available on the PS3 that I can just as easily get on the 360? I'd rather not have answers like "It's just better" but things like "Noticeable graphics difference" or "Runs better" or the obvious thing about UTIII on the PS3 having mods, which puts it streaks ahead of the 360 version, would be greatly appreciated.

To slim it down for the TL;DR people - convince me to splash out on a PS3 now, instead of later. A large part of me wants to buy one now. A voice in the back of my head has it's doubts. Thanks very much for the advice!

I think you should wait until Sony moves up more MGS4 - bundles, which they are intending to do. That bundle-playstation also has backwards compatibility, so you can play all those classics of the PS2 and you have enough space (80Gb) for those installs. If money isn't really a problem for you I recommend you to buy Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, which is kinda short but really awesome and since you have money enough I highly recommend the game.

And well I guess you like shooters cause you're a 360 owner, so SOCOM: Confrontation will be a good multiplayer game, also WarHawk (which is already long out and still has a lot of players) is a good multiplayer only game which only costs you about 30$. Resistance 2 as well, but I guess you'll be playing Gears 2 in that period cause you probably already played gears 1 and willing to know how it ends or something, but Resistance 2 will be as good I think.

I also think you should play hack 'n slash and adventure games on a PS3 because of the controller, I think it's way better for those genres than a 360 controller.

Yeah, I probably should have narrowed it down a little - I am a big fan of shooters, but I tired of gears really quickly, especially the multiplayer. Probably my favourite game genres are shooters, RPGs and hack-and-slash adventure kinda stuff, but I'll get into anything, and yeah, Warhawk and resistance 2 look awesome, and I know everyone's excited for killzone 2.

I would have to recommend to you the Uncharted as well. But if you wanted something a little different then you could go renting Heavenly Sword. Its a great game only you'll only need a rentals time to beat it. There is a game called Infamous coming out that looks pretty good so far. New details (unofficially) just came out that make it sound pretty good. I would also check out Resistance 2. Its coming out in Novemberish and looks pretty solid (i would check out the recent videos on Gametrailers.com). Also We have Killzone 2 coming next february and we have LittlebigPlanet this fall(october?). If you looking for something a bit more casual i would recommed pixeljunk Monsters of the Playstation Store. That game has sucked me in for many hours of playtime and its really fun. Nows a pretty good time to get a PS3.

I'm not really sure what model are availible in the UK but i know that the 80, 60, 20 all have backwards compatibility. I believe the MGS4 bundle is availible in the UK and that come with an 80GB PS3 which has software emulation.

Ps i would also have to agree that MGS4 is jawdropping

You don't want this on system wars becuase you don't want biased opinions, yet you place it on the PS3 forum so you can get 'unbiased' opinions? What were you expecting to get from this forum? Of course you'll get plenty of pro-PS3 go get one opinions.

Don't even bother getting the PS3 if you are in need of cash. Not sure how are you financially, but you said you sold your PS2 cause you needed the money.

I have already decided to get a PS3 - it's just when. I don't want unbiased opinions, I want information and advice, which will in turn influence my decision when to buy the console. When I'm shelling out £300+ I'm quite able to differentiate the rantings of some fanboy from actual good advice. I just don't want 360 fanboy "don't buy a PS3 replies" cluttering the thread.

"Don't even bother getting the PS3 if you are in need of cash. Not sure how are you financially, but you said you sold your PS2 cause you needed the money."

I was 12 when i had my PS2. I'm now nearly 19. As I said later on in the thread, money really isn't an object. It's not really a great plan to comment on my financial situation based on what it was like when i was a child.

Pentagram i'll say your right, and for a UK guy you type very good. Thats a compliment. Get PS3 NOW it's amazing. The only model out right now is the 40gb which is not backwards compatible and then there is the 80gb MGS4 bundle which is backwards compatible and maybe you'll be able to find it, maybe not. As for the big multiplatform games you have both systems so make your choice, mostly on the controller because most of the graphics and gameplay is nearly identical on 360 and PS3 and depending if you are looking to play online because 360 would probably be better for that. As for JRPGS they're all on 360, a lot of the games you are looking for they offer a lot more of those on PS3. Great games like Resistance, MGS, Tekken, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Socom...a lot more coming out, go and get it. Youll need the 80gb to play PS2 games but ALL PS3's come with free online, free built in wifi, and the bluray player for games and movies. Theres tons of games to enjoy....get it.

How bad do you want MGS4 really? You could wait until near Christmas when there are more games and probably a lower price because they are going to try and move units. I don't know if I could justify the purchase of a PS3 on just one game. Do you have an HDTV for Blu ray? Are you interested in some other games like Uncharted, or Motorstorm? I personally do not like Resistance at all. The gamelplay is really crappy compared to other modern FPS's like COD4. Resistance 2 might be better though, I don't know. I also wouldn't get the 40 gb model. You will most likely regret not having bc in the near future.

Although if anything is to be said i've heard rumblings of the 40gb model getting Backwards compatibility in the not so distant future (like within a year).

To be honest, it was MGS4 that peaked my interest - warhawk, resistance, killzone 2, ratchet and clank, and uncharted all seem pretty good to me - it's just MGS4 is really the "killer app" that's made me think it's worth taking the plunge. I have an HDTV, and an LCD with a VGA input so there may be something I can do with that, and BC is important to me.

I'm also considering getting a PS3 simply to play MGS4, there are other games that interest me but I could get thoes if I had a 360, unfortunatly theres only the 40gb out in the UK so no backwards compatability. The price has also recently risen since the release of GTA4 and the bundles availabl have gotten a lot worse since MGS4 hopefully this will change.
