Okay i've upgraded my 60gb ps3 before and i've successfully backed up the data and restored it. And I've done the same with my friends 80gb ps3. My other friend gave me his 40gb ps3 for a hdd upgrade, I backed the data to my external hdd. I swapped out the hdd's easily, but now i'm having trouble restoring the data back to his ps3. This is what it says when I run the ps3 40gb with the new hdd, "the system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try and restart the system. If the system cannot be started the system partition of the hard disk must be reformatted, and you must reinstall the system software. Insert storage media that contains update data of version 2.60 or later, and than press the start and select buttons at the same time. For more information on how to obtain data refer to the sce website for your region." Any help would be greatly appreciated

yeah for some reason the 40 gig is the black sheep of the family. my friend is currently having problems with his too with it playing blu ray movies but not playing blu ray games. sony told him to reformat his hdd but yeah. no go. but try uploading the system data( http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/SystemUpdates/PS3 ) to a usb flash drive or something and try installing it through that.

you need to format the Hard drive with a FAT32 partition, and you need to have the PS3 OS file saved onto another external memory source. when it asks you to install the OS from an external device, plug it in and it should work.

thats all i did too, and mine is a 40gb as well. i just backed up the utility on a external, swapped HDD's, plugged in the external and restored the system. but all i was doing is pointing out he said to format the HDD your putting in, not the external.

i had this problem before... you need to download the latest software update from sony's website (follow the direction on how to update offline) after that you should be able to reformat...then you'll be able to restore from your backup

Hello guys, ive got the 40GB PS3 and ive had no problems reallymaybe its crashed a few times but thats it really, i've got a friend who's got a 60GB PS3its just Knackered it turns but most times i just get a blank screen no sound nothing but if im lucky i get the menu screen sort if lol......i get the wavey line thing in the background and it just hangs there that the most i can get out of it lol............... Anywayz so i assume it needs reformatting so my question is can i reformat his 60GB harddirve in my 40GB PS3?, i've got this feeling ya can't because the 60GB is the only onethat can play PS2 games and PSP (i think) and has some different things to the 40GB.

Cheers

same here: my 80Gb is my only HDD and i can't get it to work because of the "system cannot run" thing and i've downloaded the newest update for ps3 and it's been plugged in and the playstation doesn't recognise the software update on the memstick it just says "no applicable data found" anyone know how to format a HDD without sata cables to fat32? or just formatting it because my computer onlly has space for 1 HDD.

I don't know if you've done this already, you need to go to playstation.com and download the most recent firmware available to the external hdd. if done correctly then the ps3 will recognize it and take over as normal. I had the same issue a few months back, but it was when Sony started to do minor updates instead of the larger updates they were doing; basically they caused the problem.

To create an image backup, you can try this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1598890

Make sure you run the PS3 Backup Utility before you proceed with an image backup.
