My PS3 got the YLOD for the third time tonight. First time was in January 2009 and then March 2009. I bought the console in 2007 ( 60 Gb) . Good thing I bought the Target extended warranty. They will send me a gift card for the original purchase price ( 599 $) since this is the third time that it happened and they will not try to fix it again. The strange thing is that all three times it bricked while I was playing games/movies rented from Blockbuster. I also have a 320 Gb/5200 rpm Samsung Hdd.

I have a few questions.

1. Could the Hdd be causing this ( the bricking started after I got the Hdd ) ?

2. Blockbuster ???!!!

3. Should I get a slim PS3 or try to find a classic model (are slim PS3 more reliable )?

4. Would my current Hdd fit into a slim PS3 ?

Thanks in advance for your answers !

Jackpot!

No idea if the hard drive could be causing it. If not it'll fit in any model PS3. I would get a slim.

More questions :

Can I just put the Hdd from the fat PS3 in the slim PS3 ? Would it work Ok ? Can I just resume all my games ?

No. I think HDD's are auto formatted when you put a new one in. You have to back up the data in it.

Correct. You will be asked to format the HDD which will erase the data from it. Backing up the data is the only way.

Are you sure ? Every time I had to send the fat PS3 for repair I used to put in the old Hdd and then switch with the 320 Gb when it came back and I never had to reformat.

My question was more about whether the slim uses some kind of different internal OS so that when I'll put in the Hdd from the fat PS3 I'll get errors or something.

From my experience, It always forced me to format the drive when switching. I even switched two different 60gb drives and it still wanted a format. What are you going to spend all that extra money on?

Not sure about your first question since everyone has told me that it reformats automatically. But for your second question, no. the slim uses the same type of HDD 2.5 inch SATA 5400 RPM notebook drive. I think the slot for taking out the hard drive is on the bottom of the console for the slim instead of the side on the phat.

the slot for the Hdd is on the front of the console. I have yet to open it up but since I only have 60gb drives laying around.

Well they won't send me a check . It's going to be a Target gift card so… something from Target I guess . Maybe a 360 ?!

I kind of wish this could have happened BEFORE I bought Demons Souls , Uncharted 2 and Borderlands
