now what i have been hearing is the rumored 40 gig ps3 will not have backwards compatibility is this true?cuz if it is i will have to spring for the 60 gig and alsodoes the 60 gig play all gamesfrom ps1 and 2 era or only a couple? mainly i want to be able to play ff7 and a couple other rpgs but before i buy one i would like to get some awnsers from yall.

there is no way it will not have backward compatabililty. there is not extra harware needed for it, it just runs off software.

Well from what i've heard with the 60 gig version you can play like 97% of past games including the amazing FFVII. The ps3 version that run emulation(which if there really is a 40 gig version i assume that that is still going to emulate the old hardware) can run like 72% of the old games. But the emulation can playability through software updates so it is possible that that number will rise over the years.

Heres the story, all PS3s have Sotfware Emulation, it's built into the firmware. So yes, even the 60GB with the EE chip have software emulation.
The 60GB with the EE also is a hardware emulation. The PS3 does not have all the same components that the PS2 has, so it (PS3) does a hardware emulation using the EE chip to help, which is why even with the EE the PS3 still doesnt play 100% of all PS2/PSX games. This is also why every PS3 has sotfware emulation, eventually any PS3 will play every game (provided it is the same region) that came out on the PS2/PSX.

yes the 20gig can play PS2 game like any other PS3.....but they don't make 20gigs anymore
