dragon age 2 is essentially a completely different game set in the same world as origins. with that being said, should i even care to play and beat origins? apparently, in dragon age 2, the first few chapters explain everything that happens in origins. so what exactly is the point of playing origins? just to see it all happen basically? input needed!!

As far as I can tell, you don;t have to have played DA:O to play DA2. If you did, you'll notice some overlapping of events from the first one and some familiar characters (Flemeth for example) but this isn't essential to the plot of DA2. These sequences just create an "Ah...thats what was happening" effect. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

Sounds right to me! But to be honest... should you "care" to play DA:O??? you're doing yourself a HUGE disservice by not playing through it.. it's totally epic. But as said above, it's influence on DA 2 will most likely be limited as DA 2 starts around the same time as DA:O and lasts 9 years longer than it. Also the area is one not seen in DA:O

I have played DA:O and the game is great. The demo I tried on DA2 lead me to the same conclusion as far as the story goes. It seems to be a freestanding game, and giving you flashbacks as to what happened in the first. I would still recommend that you played Origins, simply because it is a great game, and has a lot of memorable twists that probably wont be in any flashback. Most of them are made by your own desicions and to get that you would have to play the game yourself. If you later go back, I think you will probably be a little disappointed in the gameplay, after playing DA2. So my advice; play Origins first, then sit down and enjoy DA2.

I actually played DAO and DOA on xbox360 and im switching over to PS3 for DA2 just for the trophies. I figured DO being biowares first venture onto the PS3 itd be better on the 360. Kinda was right. But anyway I dont think decisions from the first game really carry over as much as mass effect. playing mass effect 2 on the ps3 was disappointing because a few little choices i made in 1 were impossible to carry over. i wanted conrad verner. so for trophies i play ME2 on PS3 and for story im gonna continue my choices on the 360. luckily i dont feel so attached in this case to DAO seeing as my grey warden from that doesnt carry over.

If you haven't beat it by now I wouldn't, unless you can beat it by tomorrow

I'd play the 1st. I thought it was great. Great story anyway. Sure, it's ripped right out of a Tolkein novel - but it's still got really solid dialogue trees and voice acting for a video game. Even if it's not "required", you should probably play the original game first. On the downside for the 1st I found the combat to be a little iffy (too much pausing to reach menu items). Also the framerate wasn't very good, and even got horrible at certain times (i.e. in the massive battles at the end the framerate gets rediculously bad on PS3) . From sampling the demo of DAII, they seem to have really made huge improvements with the framerate, and the combat almost felt like a hack and slash. I don't like the reports that they simplified and dumbed down the dialogue options. Perfect game for me would be the epic story of DA:Origins, but with a slicker framerate, and a much faster pased hack and slash style combat.

Well, he doesn't HAVE to get DAII on release day you know, and even if he did get it, he could wait a few days or weeks to start it while finishing up DA:Origins.

I just finished DA:Origins and might just try to hunt down a good deal on the "ultimate edition" to do all the expansions for the original. Dragon Age II will probably follow the same business model and have an ultimate edition with all the DLC, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait until next year to play the "complete edition" of the sequel.

the point of playing origins is to enjoy it because its a good game. you don't have to play it in order to play the second one but its highly recommended. if this was mass effect i would probably say you would NEED to but this one doesn't really continue your character in the same way.

personally i would just play through origins unless you have some strange stipulation like you can only buy 1 game.

awesome deal. ill just go ahead and play through origins. and apparently i hear witch hunt, golems, and awakening are the 3 main story line dlc addons or whatever. should i play those or just disregard them or what? are they really that necessary to play going into da2? and character transfer from dao to the other games.. what exactly will happen? i have google searched this (or tried to) but i cant really find a definite answer as to what specifically will happen =(

This is the problem I have with DLC content for RPGs. When I play RPGs and finish them within the first month I'm usually done forever and I sell the game. I very rarely go back. If I buy an RPG long past the release date then I tend to purchase the DLC that I deem worthy. Unfortunately this gets me in trouble because if there is a partcular DLC that I want to play then I screwed.

If you wanted to get something, get Awakenings because I believe that bridges the story between the first and the second game even though they are hundreds of years apart. Get any DLC which you find interesting.

Also don't expect to finish this game quickly either, I recall spending over 50 hours of game time.
