As far as I can tell, you don;t have to have played DA:O to play DA2. If you did, you'll notice some overlapping of events from the first one and some familiar characters (Flemeth for example) but this isn't essential to the plot of DA2. These sequences just create an "Ah...thats what was happening" effect. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.
Sounds right to me! But to be honest... should you "care" to play DA:O??? you're doing yourself a HUGE disservice by not playing through it.. it's totally epic. But as said above, it's influence on DA 2 will most likely be limited as DA 2 starts around the same time as DA:O and lasts 9 years longer than it. Also the area is one not seen in DA:O
If you haven't beat it by now I wouldn't, unless you can beat it by tomorrow

Well, he doesn't HAVE to get DAII on release day you know, and even if he did get it, he could wait a few days or weeks to start it while finishing up DA:Origins.
I just finished DA:Origins and might just try to hunt down a good deal on the "ultimate edition" to do all the expansions for the original. Dragon Age II will probably follow the same business model and have an ultimate edition with all the DLC, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait until next year to play the "complete edition" of the sequel.
the point of playing origins is to enjoy it because its a good game. you don't have to play it in order to play the second one but its highly recommended. if this was mass effect i would probably say you would NEED to but this one doesn't really continue your character in the same way.
personally i would just play through origins unless you have some strange stipulation like you can only buy 1 game.
This is the problem I have with DLC content for RPGs. When I play RPGs and finish them within the first month I'm usually done forever and I sell the game. I very rarely go back. If I buy an RPG long past the release date then I tend to purchase the DLC that I deem worthy. Unfortunately this gets me in trouble because if there is a partcular DLC that I want to play then I screwed.
If you wanted to get something, get Awakenings because I believe that bridges the story between the first and the second game even though they are hundreds of years apart. Get any DLC which you find interesting.
Also don't expect to finish this game quickly either, I recall spending over 50 hours of game time.
