For some reason their are certain DVD's (specifically Night At The Museum and Monty Python And the Search For the Holy Grail) that when I try to play they casue the picture to go black with only sporadic flashes of visuals, and everything is black including when I press the PS button. It won't go back to normal until it stops playing the movie. Does anyone know about this problem, has anyone else played those movies without that problem? IS it a malfunction? I have had no other problems with my PS3... help me.

sounds like a specific fault with those movies ... could be the disc's or the movie encoding but if other movies are okay then i don't think its your PS3 ...

Your not trying to play a NTSC DVD in a PAL PS3 or a PAl dvd in a NTSC PS3 are you as DVD's are region locked they wouldn't work that's what is seems like to me.

I've never tried the upscaling but could that be a part of the problem?

I've messed with the upscaling and it hs no effect, and those moies play on all other DVD players, and its not that the movie wont play, I can hear it, its just the PS3 cuts the picture in and out, but no one else has hear of this? Because if not then I think it might be my PS3:(

Oh and the sound works with or without the picture, but I take by the lack of posts that no one knows what I'm talking about...

it might be your TV, mine always tries to get the better resolution so it sometimes switches to grey screen and gets back to movie or game and I can't get this option off

It sounds like your PS3 is outputting RGB via your component cables instead of YPbPr. Change this in the display settings. If that doesn't work, try changing your cables to HDMI or even composite and see if the movie works. I had the same problem as you on a PS2. Had to set Component mode to YPbPr. For the PS3, the setting is different, but it's not hard to figure it out. A previous poster suggested you might have been trying to play a PAL dvd on an NTSC machine. This is not true. If you tried that, the PS3 would not even read the DVD. It will come up with a message saying that it cannot play PAL movies and won't even start.
