Why would you?

.. and what for do i need to format it? polishkid99

You don't.

what does it do........polishkid99

It erases everything on your HDD.

and, can anything bad can happen to my ps3? like i try to turn it on and it sais disc error or something?? im afraid to touch it now :(polishkid99

Very unlikely you'll experience anything more than the occasional software freeze. Nothing a hard reset won't fix.

It's where you shut the system down from the power switch in the back.

Most often times you only need to put your finger on the normal power button for a few secs to force a shutdown. In the worst of freezing cases you'll need to do a hard reset. The only time it would "hurt" something is if the system was busy doing something critical, like installing a firmware update.
