Hey there, this is my first post here. I've searched through the entire site and, while there was one thread that seemed to described my situation exactly, it didn't provide any answers and I still haven't found any help yet. My situation:

Just bought a new HP laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate as well as a Netgear WNR834Bv2 wireless-N router. My PS3 is set up with uPNP on and NAT type 2 and running firmware 2.43. Through the new router I am able to connect my old laptop (4 year old Compaq running Windows XP and WMP11) to my PS3 and stream audio (though I never got video to work), but I can't get ANYWHERE with my new laptop.

I have turned off the firewall, shared out my music folder, and added my music folder to my WMP11 folder. I can even see my old laptop in my Vista WMP11 library. But my PS3 can't see my Vista and my Vista can't see my PS3.

When I open my Media Sharing tab, it lists no devices at all. What's going on???

Everyone keeps talking about Nero Media Center and XMB--I don't have either (nor should I need them, as evidenced by my ability to connect with my old laptop...i'd like to keep this a low-cost solution!). Someone please help!

Wow, I knew there was a console war going on, but I didn't think Microsoft would take it this far..

:P

As for your problem, TC, I'm not sure. I don't use media sharing myself, sorry.

:(

I appreciate the suggestion to turn off the firewall as well as the corresponding horror of the response, but it was too late...I've already turned off the firewall.

That said, you were right, it was the internet security settings of my antivirus! Who knew? I'm used to running a corporate version provided by work which didn't have that feature. Thanks!

After upgrading to Vitsa, for some reason my PS3 only sees my MP3s when they're in the PUBLIC MUSIC folder... they can't be in my personal music folder. Man, I miss XP... what a temperamental piece of garbage Vista is.

Basically once you install SP1 on vista, it enables some extra security features and is really easy to fix this...

1. make sure you define folders in WMP11 that you want to share.
2. In network and sharing center, switch OFF password protected sharing
( this is an extra feature to protect files from people ONLY on your network, but as you are the only one on your network it is ok to do)
3. Assign Extra (I assign my normal ones too this way) Folder locations manually.
- Right Click on the folder you want your ps3 to access and select properties
- Click sharing Tab, now click Share, where it says " people to share with" type "Everyone", Click Add, Click Share and ok and close a couple of times.
4. Reboot your pc for everything to enable (do it anyway)
5. Start up your ps3 and away you go, there are the folders and files you are sharing. (you may need to re search for your media server)

It all works for me, its just an extra security feature in windows vista sp1, which allows people not to share some folders without a password on their local network. Happy Days :-)

I too am having the same issue. I have done everything suggested here but was not totally sure what was meant by:

"1. make sure you define folders in WMP11 that you want to share. "

Can someone please clarify, thanks.

I have done everything suggested here. I can connect to my media centre using other computers and can see that the PS3 is connecting to the media server as there is a corresponding MAC address of an unknown device visible in the media player media sharing window. I have also allowed this device but still unable to find any media servers on the PS3.

Any help would be greatyl appreciated as I do not want to roll back to SP1.

Thanks

I use vista...here is what i do when i use media sharing:

first off on vista go to windows media player. Then go to library and right click. go down to media sharing. From there u could disable firewall settings. When sharing is enabled firewall settings are disabled. then:-

what you need to do is set-up your router and have your ps3 and laptop on the same network. next you go to "settings" on your ps3 and and go all the way down to "network settings" then press "X" and go to "media server sharing" press "X" to enable the media server. Your laptop is then the media server. Exit from settings and go to music, photo or video and search for media servers. Sometimes you dont have to search for it, your laptop should pop up and you should go from there.

WARNING: turning on the media server affects your online connection. when you quit a game it will disconnect from psn and media server gets lost you would have to reconnect to psn and scan for media servers again!

Also be sure to go to networking (after right clicking on library in WMP go to media sharing and then networking). Here u could adjust a number of factors. In particular you would want to turn on network discovery on your laptop. It enables it to discover other devices on your routers network. Goodluck. I am nowhere near my PS3 and wont be for the next two weeks but i hope this helps.

Open Network sharing center. Then turn on the option for media sharing. That worked for me.

I have a question that has never been truly answered regarding media sharing. Has anyone experienced network dropout(getting disconnected from the playstation network) when having media sharing enabled? I have to run with it off since having it enabled during a game kicks me off. Am I the only one?

You'll have to set up the router as you're home network rather than public. Then it will work. Just delete the network from you're computers memory, and then detect and install it as you're home network again. That's what i did, if not that is the problem with you're router.

Vista is not really the issue, it is SP1 that is the issue. If I uninstall SP1 then the media center connects fine but as soon as I install SP1 I am unable to connect.

Can anyone confirm that thy have media sharing working with SP1 and if so was there anything that they had to do to get it working?

thanks.
