Hey Guys and Gals, When my son turns on his PS3, the image in the background shows up, but the menu does not, what can be causing this?

Sounds like your hard drive has corrupted, I believe the only way forward is try a new hard drive or format the existing hard drive, this will have to be done by connecting the hard drive to a PC

Just open the PC up and hook the HD to a sata cable. Right click the HD in explorer, click format and format to Fat32.

You can also format it by inserting it into another PS3. But you do know that formatting your HD means losing ALL your data right? So all your savegames and gamedata will be lost after you format it.

You would need to remove the drive from your PS3 (there are plenty of guides on the internet for this), for the easy option you could do with an enclosure( see web address below, link not working), fit the drive into the enclosure, plug into pc and from your "My computer" page right click the drive, select format and follow any instructions. When that is done refit the drive into your PS3 and you should get a prompt to format your hard drive, after this you should be ok. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/dynamode-25-hard-drive-sata-caddy-to-usb-silver-storage-enclosure-bus-powered-pc-mac

In this case I'm not sure another PS3 would help, if one PS3 can't read it I'm pretty certain another one can't. Can't hurt to try though

That'll be the easier option, and you could get a higher capacity one aswell.

Go to the diagnostics menu (hold the power button in for ten seconds while turning it on) and select file recovery. It finds a corruption in the disc and fixes it for you. When it brings you to the start up screen the menu wont be there but give it 5 - 10 seconds and it should appear. Hope this helps.

You can try and get the PS3 into save mode to re-install the Firmware again before changing HDD's or formatting it.

Just downlod the latest Firmware from the official Playstation site into a USB drive or something and then look on youtube how to get the console into Save Mode, it's pretty simple.
