I've bought quite a few PS1 Classics, and I've found most of them to still be just as enjoyable as they were back when I first played them. There have been a few exceptions though, with games that I find myself thinking "I used to enjoy this?" Anyone else have this experience?

For me:

Jet Moto 2

Twisted Metal 2

Pandemonium

Dino Crisis

The only classic I've downloaded is FFVII but I haven't played it yet. I did start it up for a couple minutes to see if my old PS1 saves worked with the download version though and just based on that, the graphics certainly aren't the greatest on an HDTV

Yeah, the graphics on FF VII don't look so good, but the gameplay has definitely held up well (for me, anyway). I replayed that one last year, and am currently replaying FF VIII. Still great experiences. :D

Oh I don't doubt the gameplay holds up. FFVII and FFVIII are 2 of my favorite games so I know I'll still enjoy both when I finally do get around to replaying them.

MGS. It was great when I first played it, but now I find it pretty much unplayable. That's the only PS1 classic I've bought, btw.

Yeah, I had a feeling that one wouldn't hold up so well - which is why I've resisted the urge to download it.

Jet moto and Twisted metal 2. They looks pretty ugly but I still play them and have tons of fun on them. Lol I had to download jet moto just to finish nebulous in first place once. :) It is still worth it.

the tank controls of RE make he ame un playable, i cant figure out how ppl actually played those games, i havent played the older games since the 90s and i always thought i just sucked a video games back then(my neighbor had a psx, i was still rockin' a 2600) i never realized the games were just crap.

also after playing MGS for ten minutes i thought it was aweful, but kept playing cause it was the only one i hadnt played and gotp was about to come out... anywho, by the first time i saw rex in the game i thought it was the best looking games ive seen in a while lol

I actually just finished Suikoden today and I thought that it has held up very well. For the most part RPG's will hold up well as far as gameplay goes.

I still play through MGS from time to time and it still holds up very well in my mind. The plot is great and I actually love the controls.

I don't know. Most of the games I bought, I've really liked. I have no problem with older games and know and understand they cannot compare to today's standards in gaming. Then again, I don't just buy "any" PS1 game either.

People have to remember, this was 1995 ~ 2000. Most of these games were "top of the line" back then.

Unlikely. Games from the early PS1 days often feel archaic because 3D game development was still in its infancy back then, meaning that games were necessarily rough around the edges. Developers were still figuring out the basics (like camera control, for instance). I don't think that will be the case with today's games - at least not to the same degree.

It would be because people want to reach the power of movie quality CGI and video games always seem to be five years behind. No game engine can really reach that level yet at it's current capabilities and what you can actually fit in a plastic case at a reasonable cost.

Exactly what I was going to say. Games from this gen will age much better than last gen, especially in the graphics department(obviously taking the limits at the time into consideration). It's like comparing NES games 10 years after release vs SNES games 10 years after release.

lol, This is exactly what I was thinking when I clicked on this topic.

They need to get Jet Moto 3 in there, what with the crazy trick modes and stuff.

?? I don't see how this has anything to do with what I'm talking about. Of course games will continue to move forward graphically (though I think it will be largely incremental from this point on), but developers are well past the point of coming to grips with the basics of gameplay mechanics. It's the clumsy design choices of the early days of 3D game development (tank controls, fixed cameras) that make some games of that era feel so archaic.

Very true. 2D games, particularly from the SNES/Genesis era have generally aged better than their slightly younger 3D counterparts - probably because the art of developing 2D games had already been refined by that point.

I agree, I doubt gaming will grow much beyond this. Increased visuals even if they reached that CGI level wouldn't cause the games of today to age poorly. Games age poorly when they become unplayable like the original MGS, if you play the GC version that holds up much better to the test of time.

I never played the PS1 version but I did play the GC version. I want to replay the game and I was considering buying the PS1 version off of PSN since new copies of the GC version are pretty expensive, but do you think that if I went from the GC version to the PS1 version that it might ruin the game for me?

As far as I can recall, the only real difference (besides graphics), is that you can't aim in first person mode in the PS1 version. It's pretty annoying and it does make it harder to stealthily take out enemies from a distance, but I never found it to be gamebreaking or anything.

FF VII
dont get me wrong, the game is still really fun but I noticed a pattern of my fun level and game process
the first part of the game was fun and around disc 2 the game became awsome and when I got my ultima (leveled and ready for use) the game started to rapidly fall

You wait until we start hitting 3D and i bet we will do it Virtually one day with our bodies and the controller.

I've thought about downloading the Gex games, but I have a feeling they haven't aged well. I mean, they weren't exactly masterpieces to begin with (though I did enjoy them at the time).

No, it doesn't. Primitive 3d is just hard to go back to. Take any good 2d platformer on the snes/nes/genesis... They'll still play as well today as they ever have.

edit: To be on-topic, I'll throw out Spyro. I knew it wasn't going to have aged well when buying it, though I wanted it for nostalgic purposes... And yet it has aged even worse than I expected.

The game is fun but can be pretty ugly. especially when the backround flashes from something that isn't the arena to something that is.

Yeah, the graphics are pretty hideous in that one. My problem with the game is the controls though - it was a pre-analog game, and the 3D movement just doesn't feel right. Too jerky.

The only two I've downloaded are Silent Hill, which hasn't aged well, and FF VII, which looks like it was from the ColecoVision era moreso than a PS1 title. A friend of mine tells me I should keep playing it, as it gets really good eventually. Well, I'm playing Final Fantasy XII.

Agreed. I like FF12, but it's not the best representative of the series.
