is the ps3 backwards compatible with ps2 games? i have heard that they are and that they are not.

Not any more. The 80gig MGS4 Bundle was the last one to have BC. If BC is something you really, really want then I suggest looking for a 60gig model on EBay. You can also order refurbished models from GameStop.com But for BC the 60gig is the best model to get because it has the Emotion Engine built in which is basically the hardware from the PS2. The 80gig that I mentioned earlier uses software emulation which doesn't work with as many games as the EE.

Original 60 Gig and 20 Gig have an actual PS2 in them. Some of the older 80 gigs did thru software as well. Here is a good site for checking if a game will play on your PS3. http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus Good Luck
