Yes, you can! Get a PS2 to PS3 Converter, and your PS2 controller will work like a charm on PS3. Some good converters even convert the analog button. :)

Not all games work with a PS2 controller though (I remember trying Rainbow 6 Vegas for split-screen coop and it didn't work), and you're obviously not gonna have motion-controls and a PS button.

yeah really you can't have the sixaxis which you need in certain games.

one i was playing resistance FOM splitscreen and i was on fire(literally i mean , not like on a kill streak or something:P) and i was using a dualshock 2 and to put the fire you have to shake the controller and obviously the fire would not go out no matter what i did, so i just watched my health bar go down slowly.
