So my dad bought a PS3 awhile ago and i have only used it maybe like 3 times and i wanted to play an old PS2 game that i used to love. i've read and heard people bragging that the PS3 plays all PS2 games and PS1 games but when i put them in my system it says my ps3 isnt a compatable version or something like that. is there some special update i need to get some where or something?

No update needed. Only the earlier models had "full" BC. Pick up a PS2 for $99.

You shouldnt have to pay $99 for something that should be included in the PS3, especially as when it was being developed backwards compatitbilty was bragged as a big selling point. Screw you Sony :|

It was included, everyone complained about the price and usage showed BC was a minority feature. BC was axed, price was cut, and people complained about the lack of the feature.

There are two main reasons why your PS3 does not play the games.A.You have one of the newer models that don't support PS2 B/C......B.You have an original 80 gig which only plays about 75% of the PS2 games.Count how many USB portsare on the front of your console. If you have 4 then you have one of the older models,if you have only 2 then you have one of the newer models which does not play PS2 games at all.
