Sorry for another post about this. I've tried nearly everything (take apart, clean carefully, use canned air, re-apply thermal paste, run it with no case on for max air flow) but I still get loud fan noise very quickly. I bought it used so it's no big deal but I'd like the thing to work! The only other things I can think of to do are getting a 19 blade instead of 15 blade fan and taking off the CPU & GPU covers to apply thermal paste under these i.e. directly to the chips. I also watched a clip on YouTube of someone heating the chips with a heat gun to get the solder to reflow or something, apparently it works. I get the impression however that this is likely all to be a waste of time and money i.e. it's just badly made / designed and will run hot always. So, is there anything else that is genuinely worth trying or should I just give up? Does it really matter if the PS3 runs hot / with a loud fan long-term?

I would say it matters, yeah. The PlayStation 3 getting louder/hotter seems to be the first stage of a complete failure. At least that's how it happened from my experience with my original 60GB dying.

Cheers. Maybe I was a bit of a mug as fan noise was mentioned in the ebay ad. I should probably try and sell it to somebody keen to do a more thorough fix, if that's possible...
