Im looking for my first ps3 and my cousin is sellin his ps3 40gb for $150 (comes w/ sixxaxis controller, all hookups, box, and warhawk game) which he had for 1 year and just went out of warranty 20 days ago. (Its kept in a well ventilated room)I knowu guysare gonna say 40gb wont be enough hdd buti had a 20gb 360 which i sold and i only used like 10gb of it.Hes sellin it to get the new slim... The only thing im worried about is if i get it then it gets ylod or somethin in a couple weeksthen im gonna be mad. But i heard how ps3 has such a low percentage of hardware failure thats why im considering buying used and saving half off the price of new. I could either buy hisand have a ps3 before december or wait and buy one around christmas time like a new 80gb or a new 120gb slim...... I have some questions though

1. My cousin plays all the time, like 5-10+ hours a day....will it be more prone to a hardware failure for example ylod?

2. He uses the fan sometimes....is it true it damages the ps3?

3. He says everything works but it froze when he first got it (last year) but it stopped after a couple times...is that normal?

Sorry for the new post i needed more opinions.......Thanks alot guys i appreciate the comments

I'd just buy a new slim to be honest. The extra money would be worth the warranty and new hardware IMO. 5-10 hours a day??? Damn, that's a lot of gaming. Does he has a job? LOL

Same here, the first thing I've ever bought used was Gears 1 and i regretted that. The case must have went through a blender with it's past owner.

Well there all the same but dont get the 40 cuz you'll run out of space pretty quick, but you cant buy harddrives for less than $100. It doesnt really matter which ps3 you get unless you like the new look of the slim and think having a fat ps3 is a problem. but I guess the slim since they all do the samething and the slim has more space (120gb), unless the slim comes with a bunch of hardware issuses O.o oh and freezing is common on every type of electronic device

Depends on what matters to you more

Would you rather have the version that consumes less energy and runs cooler, has a larger harddrive and has newer componenets?

Or do you care more about the gloss finish, chrome trim and touch senstive buttons?

I wouldn't buy used when it comes to expensive electronics like a console or a TV. Games are just fine used, but I wouldn't gamble if you're talking about something that costs a few hundred dollars.

Don't forget that several retailers are offering enticing bundles to get their remaining 80GBs off the shelves. I think Best Buy has an 80GB bundle with LittleBigPlanet and Wall-E Bluray for $300.

I dunno $150 is a pretty good deal. I have a 40 gig model, it's about a year and a half old. I put a 250 gig drive in it for $60. I mean since you accually know the person and if you know he takes care of stuff I'd seriously think about buying it. I can understand the appeal of the slim but for $150 I don't think I could pass that up unless it was a total stranger selling it.

Best get the PS3 slim for it is more stable than the older model. And it produce less heat. Logically speaking that is.

patriots7672

im actually starting to reconsider that because i wouldnt have a ps3 till around christmas time or i can get his within 1 or 2 months.....i used to have a 360 and i barely played it thats why i dont want to make the same mistake i did with the 360, i bought the 360 for $350....i dont wanna spend another $300 on a system and barely play it just like my 360. I want a ps3 for sure but im not sure if i should spend all that moneyand thennot even play it alot..... but i want a system that can be reliable and its not gonna break down because then i gotta pay $150 to get it fixed from sony if anything happens to it....... but the ps3 only has like a 10% failure rate.... idk... we would probably have to ship it about 1,000 miles or whenmy dadgoes to visit in november he couldtake it back or when i go upin december i could maybe take it back home with me....it all depends when my cousin gets enough money to buy the slim.......idk is there any way i could buy a warranty for it even if the sony warranty expired about 20 days ago?

No offense but if you know you won't have a lot of time for gaming or just won't play the system a lot for whatever reason, then why buy one? I am not saying you should play as much as your cousin but if you are only going to play like 20 minutes a week why bother with gaming in general? As a rule of thumb I say if you can't at least put in a half hour a day to games then don't even get into it. I would just get the slim. Your cousin's system might be just fine and if it did work $150 isn't a bad deal for the 40GB with 2 controllers and warhawk. It's up to you. If you don't game that much then I would say don't buy it. If you just want to watch movies on it, then maybe it is worth it. You present a weird situation.

Well, if its your cousin then in the event that it breaks down, you can just pay him to have all the repairs from Sony done, so I'd probably do that, of course I hear you can get a bundle for $300 in some cases, so I'd look for that just for some nice free games.

imo you are going to need the hardrive space. My ps3 is 40 gb and my 360 is 20gb yet my 360 has much more space. I think the 40 gb acctually starts out as 27 and ALOT of ps3 games require installation so the space dies pretty fast. The 360 20gb acctually only gives you 13 gb but because of no required installations you will in the long run have more space.

Buy the slim. Also if you live somewhere where you can just carry it back to teh store and get a replacement then buy teh extended store warranty. My sp3 has died twice. First time i ahd warranty but second time(recently) i dont and the charge is $150 plus a long shipping time so just get the extended warranty. It will be worth it. I hear best buys works that you dont have to rebuy the warranty if it breaks and you replace it so check that out.

Your just going to have to take a small risk and hope things work. Anything can break, microwaves or anything that uses electric. Either buy a new one to be safe or buy your cousin's and then buy a warranty from Sony or something. I mean yeah it's a good bit of money, but it's notgetting cheaper anytime soon.Your paying a lot less than some of us did for our systems. It's a gaming system, your not taking out a loan or have to pay interest on it. I am not trying to sound like an a**hole but this topic goes on all the time in different variations. "is PS3 worth it, is the PS3 worth it if you already have a 360" or something. What is so scary about the PS3 that people are afraid to buy it? It's not going to be a dreamcast. If the PS3 was going to go down it would have at this point.

If anything the PS3 has gained more support over time. 2 years ago no one wanted to work with the PS3. Now you are seeing 360 exclusives go muliplat like DeadRising, Lost Planet, Bioshock, Castle Crashers, Braid.I am not saying that your suggesting any of this, I am just saying why not buy a PS3 unless you can't afford it.

I bought a 360 a little over a year ago and I kind of regret it becauseright after I bought it, quite a few 360 games were going multiplat and that was rather annoying. I only have like 2 or 3 games on 360 I want to play because of all the multiplatforming that went on. Now is a good time to buy the system. There are qute a few top tier titles that are now greatest hits and there are cool games coming this fall.

Buy the used one and put in a new hard drive. If it breaks soon after, make your cousin pay for it. Simple.

It's called calling up sony and asking if they can extend the warranty or ask your cousin or his parent's to do it if you are going to buy it to be safe. If you 15 and can't get a slim why ask in the first place? It seems that you have saved up that $150 yourself, why don't you ask your parents to pay the other half in exchange for chores or something?

i think im goin with the 40gb probably....if it breaks ill sell just the system to someone on craigslist who wants a fix it project for at least 50 bucks or more then ill keep the game and the controller which together equal about $100 bucks...he's selling it for $150 for everything(system, game, controller, hookup cables, box)then buy a new ps3 but im hoping it will work good for a long time....
