i have a question.. what i need to use the 5.1 surround sound from dvd player to the ps3.. i have a ps3 with a 32" hdtv and a dvd player with 5.1 i don't even know if its possible.. any help?
my stereo is a sony 5.1 system.it has 2 digital sound inputscoax and optical.my ps3 is using the optical of course and dvd is connected by coax.both give you dolby digital 5.1.ive never seen a dvd player that doesnt have both coax and optical outputs.so if this is what youre trying to do thats how ive got mine hooked up.

Since he says his DVD player has 5.1 surround, it sounds like he has a integrated DVD/receiver home theater system. If that is the case you would connect the optical output on the PS3 to the optical input on the DVD/receiver. Hopefully it has an optical input. I would imagine that many of them don't as they are not true A/V receivers.
if you don't have a reciever that can output 5.1 then u cant... if the dvd player is stand-alone it would be optical out meaning it would need a reciever.. same as the ps3 the optical input is for out only
